Cayuse Vineyards
Walla Walla Valley Syrah

The oldest Cayuse I’ve had thanks to @Steve Anderson and an interesting comparison to what I’m used to from this house. The nose had none of the fox fur funk that I’m conditioned to expect; likewise no black olive tapenade in the taste profile. That being said, I thought it showed really well. Depth, balance and still some marked residual power. A fun chance to see what Cayuse is at age 20.

In a tough spot between the Grange and the Chave in the 1st Syrah flight. 5th of 6 bottles from blue OWC. Although it wasn’t in the same class as the Grange, it drank above expectations for its age and pedigree (purchased fruit, pre-estate vineyards I think). Pre-

4th of 6 bottles from a well-stored original blue OWC, and the best to date. Nice example to share with friends at Hospice du Rhone. Still alive and kicking. From purchased fruit.

Third if six bottles from an obviously well stored blue OWC. Great fill and cork. A bit heavier dose of funk on the nose than the previous two bottles, but isn't that what many of us enjoy about Cayuse? Fruit has faded and the balance is leaning toward acid, but still some savory elements remaining.

Excellent cork and fill. Still dark with mild dose of the Cayuse funk. Slightly lighter bodied and less fruit than most Cayuse offerings, although I've mostly had 2007 and on. I presume this has likely faded a bit since release, but could also be due to the 13.5 % ABV. Exceeded expectations overall.

Not quite Green and Gold, but close enough to celebrate the Packers win. A little tired and past prime, but still some grip, spice and power on the mid-palate, although it tails off on the finish. Despite the critique, still a nice drink. 13.5% ABV. 🏈
