Château Bel Air-Marquis d'Aligre
Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend
Smells like sitting next to Churchill: old booze and cigar smoke. Aromas of Rhubarb, green stems, cassis and worn leather. The 27-year-old wine comes together more pleasantly on the palate with medium weight, good acid and balance showing still some freshness. Gravel and present tannins with aging fruit.

Sep 13th, 2023So classy. The epitome of elegance. More notes later. Nose is heaven. Floral, leather, earthy, truffles, mushrooms. Porcini. Sick nose. Heaven. Palate is pure finesse. Sweet fruit. Floral. So pure. Essence of Bordeaux

Audouze Method is going to be my total go-to way when opening older bottles...6H at time of initial tasting, but showing about the same as prior decanted bottles, maybe more closed?

Nose has dried blackcurrant, graphite, rain soaked roses, dried cherries, bruised violets, moist leather and dusty earth.
Palate has dried cherries, dried blackcurrant, slight iron/steel notes, sun baked soil, black tea-like tannins with a drying finish.
An elegant wine, not as generous on the palate as a recent 1996 vintage enjoyed, but not any level of dissatisfaction tonight.
Cork pulled for slow oxidation for 2H, then decanted 4H.
Blend is assumed as 30% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc & 20% Petit Verdot/Malbec/Carmenère.

Moss, mushroom, tobacco and damp leaf nose. Nice burnt sienna color, a little hazy, but not much fruit or tertiary quality beyond forest floor. Decent acid; dry, ungiving and tired overall. Little change after 12 hour decant. Was thinking possible subpar storage but other reviews suggest this may be past prime.

1 person found it helpfulJun 29th, 2020Took about 5 hours in the decanter for this to open. For most of that time it was pretty muted. It rounded out on the palate some eventually. Fairly resolved tannins so silky texture and the flavor profile is savory, earthy, leather, cigar box.
