Every 50th birthday party should end with a birth year wine. What better than an old Bordeaux and one of our favorite producers from Bordeaux? Happy 50th Birthday Sofia a splendid night of great food, friends, wine and environment.

In the magnificently stocked wine cellar of a new acquaintance, we randomly picked out a -66 Pichon Longueville Lalande (didn't see any -61s) (and a -88 Chambertin from Trapet). The 50-year-old Puillac wine was dark garnet in color; nose was large and dominated by horse stable floor, cedar, leather, and molten leaves; on the palate it showed age (lower acids and a lean body) but with nice cherries, some tannins and a long interesting finish.

Delightful wine with resolved tannins and a smooth palate feel. Cork was still viable and fill level was excellent. Medium body and its components were in harmony. A delight to drink and share with friends. Happy Birthday Joe......

This did more than hold its own in a 1966 tasting that included Haut Brion and l’Eglise Clinet. Beautiful wine, very elegant.
