Clonakilla
Canberra District Shiraz Viognier
Canberra District, Southern New South Wales, New South Wales, Australia

This is generally regarded as the best example of Shiraz Viognier in Australia but recently I tried a 2015 Serrat Shiraz Viognier which was the equal of Clonakilla if not better. As per previous Delectable notes this bottle had the trademark dried spices, cloves a trace of pepper and dried meat. Barely medium weight and always a joy to drink. My last bottle.

An absolutely alluring nose with cloves, spice, dried meat and a trace of pepper. Barely medium weight on the palate. Barb loved it for that. Very different to Barossa or McLaren Vale Shiraz. Without a doubt the best Shiraz Viognier blend in Australia although Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 2 (with a few other Rhone varieties in the blend) would give it a run for its money. Really very good with a few years to go but pretty much at its peak.

Another favourite Australian Red but this 2014 vintage not showing as well as it normally does. I put it down to the vintage. Aromatically it is spicy but subdued; digging deeper there is earth and clove with herbs. With time, meaty aromas emerge. Perhaps more time will reveal more and provide more depth on the palate.

Feb 4th, 2024Visually a clear, ruby-garnet color with medium intensity. Herbaceous to the nose, reminiscent of tomato leaf, then the red/ black plum, red cherry aroma kicked in. Medium in body and taste, affirming the flavors detected on the nose with added notes of liquorice, earthy wet forest floor. Medium acidity with soft rounded tannins, but finish was short, medium at best which was a pity.

Kraftfullt men lättdrucket.
