Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe
La Crau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend
The 2007 Vieux Telegraphe, enjoyed here from half bottle, encapsulates everything so wonderful about Chateauneuf-du-Pape, coming from very old vines on the fabled plateau of La Crau. Pungent aromatics; an ethereal cacophony of sweet cranberry, blackcurrant, strawberry, liquorice, blood orange, white pepper and garrigue (in spades), with airy elegance and poise. The palate follows in much the same style, graceful and welcoming, adding flecks of sweet vanilla. There is, however, a core of iron and solid structure that ties everything together. This is accomplished stuff, even in such a brilliant vintage as 2007, and this elegant, complex CNdP warrants a high score – and further ageing.

Jul 28th, 2024See previous note 127 weeks ago. Notes of raspberry and dried fruits. Still herbaceous and after a while there was garrigue. The palate was more full bodied than usual in this excellent vintage - medium to full bodied. More savoury than fruit driven at 14 years with resolved soft tannins. A hedonistic mouthful of deliciousness! Grenache 65%, Syrah 15%, Mourvèdre 15%, Cinsault 5% - first 10 months in cement and then 12 months in large foudres. Balanced, harmonious and classic.

Nov 28th, 2019The second Rhone last Sunday. Earthy loam notes together with ripe Grenache aromas of raspberry and red liquorice although the raspberry notes are much more savoury at 12 years. On the medium bodied palate some Liqueur cherry notes with mild resolved tannins. At its peak - fruit, oak, tannin and acid all in balance. The perfect accompaniment to Roast Lamb and Vegetables. A blend of 65% Grenache 15% Syrah 15% Mourvèdre and 5% Cinsault.

Jun 30th, 2019Solid and even youthful but unremarkable in a diverse lineup with Peking duck. Definitely lots of Primary fruit and rustic.

At a perfect drinking stage, this wine has shed some baby fat, and is showing some development with hints of smoke, wet earth, mushrooms and garrigue. The fruit is ripe yet no longer explosive (had same vintage 2 years ago, and fruit was overbearing), there are so many alluring flavors and aromas yet all is in balance with alcohol. Delicious.
