Egon Müller
Scharzhofberger Kabinett Riesling
A somm-recommended bottle after being consulted on which vintage might be the most open of the Egon kabi’s, and right he was. The 16’ was singing! Very Egon with the notes cassis, salt/slate, and a touch of cream. Definitely sweeter and richer (less of a classic kabi) than the Haart Ohligsberg Alter Reben kabi, but still very energetic and quaffable. Plus, I can’t look pass how singular these wines are (see notes on the other mentioned wine on a little related rant).

Nov 18th, 2022Egon strikes again with this flint inflected, plain seductive bottle of energy. Displays the sun-kissed fruit of the vintage, yet maintains a great freshness and vibrancy to it. Finishes with heaps of zest and minerality. First bottle to grace the table, first bottle to finish without a hitch. Yum!

Dec 8th, 2019Scharzhofberger is one of the most famous vineyard sites in all of Germany. This south-facing site is situated at an elevation of 180-280 meters with vines planted on very steep slopes with mineral rich soils formed from grey devonian slate. These characteristics are reflected beautifully in the wine, as the 2016 Scharzhofberger Kabinett Riesling displays an incredible combination minerality and brightness. This continues to dazzle as it shows incredible purity and elegance, with captivating aromatics of sliced apples, lime, orange zest, white florals and crushed slate nuances which all come together beautifully in the glass. This is every bit as impressive on the palate as it shows remarkable focus and precision with outstanding overall balance as it leads up to the succulent, mouth watering finish. While the 2016 is absolutely sublime today, it should also have a brilliant future ahead and continue to drink beautifully for years to come.

Sep 16th, 2019A penetrating nose features gooseberry, cassis, apricot and apple, and suggestions of seeds and pits – as well as a nettle-like prickle – lend invigorating crunch and piquancy to the brightly animating, cheek-scouring acidity that emerges on the palate. But even as you feel the impact of the acids, there is a sheer juiciness that keeps them from turning uncomfortably severe. And the penetrating finish here, predictably, delivers a decisive impression of wet stone and displays admirable balance as regards sweetness. This sole “regular” Müller Kabinett of its vintage (there’s also an Alte Reben bottling) has plenty of cellar potential. And it makes up nearly half of this year’s combined Scharzhofberg and Braune Kupp production. (David Schildknecht, Vinous, March 2018)

Oct 12th, 2018Pale pale lemon in colour. Oily diesel notes with Honeysuckle. I have never smelt oily diesel in such a young Riesling before - always associating those notes with mature 10+ year old Riesling. Only 9% Alcohol so it is sweet.
