Jean-Jacques Morel
Puligny-Montrachet Chardonnay
The final white of JJ Morel I will ever taste. First one that is not with him thanks to Covid-19. It’s bittersweet. Just an amazing nose. So bright. So high toned. Citrus jelly. Smoke. Hickory. Hazelnuts. Saline. Inside of a fancy chocolate found in some exotic assortment box. The one you have to ask “what’s in this?” Palate is electricity. Impossibly complex. Stunning deep and very expressive minerality. Perfect supernal balance. Big attack. Long and gentle finish. Amazing mid palate. Finish is super zesty. Pure and layered. The sum of the parts in full effect here. A wine of indescribable genius. A swan song like no other.

Aug 10th, 2020Nose has vinegar saturated oak, toasted hazelnut, wet silica sand, jasmine on fire and orange rind jelly.
Palate has charred walnut, lime rind, under-ripe orange, wet sandstone, hazelnut butter with a long finish.
Cork pulled for slow oxidation at 10H, then double decant for service.
I think this is a 24-36H bottle, too youthful to evaluate fully but it should go the distance, 10+.

My note from night 1: Wild green fruit on open. Tremendous volumes of fruit and marzipan flavor through the palate and vibrant finish. Wild. Soulful. Weird. Some VA just on the line.
Sad night 2 update: this has become very mousy, unfortunately no longer palatable. Not going to rate. 9.4–>?

Has the same overt let your hair down bathe in the sun vibes I remember from JJM's Bourgogne Blanc. This is deeper, more vibrant, more concentration, more sun.
His wines are something - wild, clearly natural in the Zeitgeist sense, not what I think of when I hear Puligny Montrachet.
Pours hazy and looks sticky. Smells like sour starfruit, grilled pineapple, banana taffy, and jalapeno.
Goes down in thick textured blood orange and bitter grapefruit. Gobs of texture that wrap your tongue in a blanket of acid and says dammit I'm here and I'm alive and I'm staying for a bit.
