Cardiac Hill Vineyard Syrah
Very energetic wine. Blind, I would be in The Rhone valley. Bright berry fruit with great floral. Long, refreshing finish.

May 25th, 2015My last of the 3 bottles, and probably the most balanced bottle of the 3. Meaty and spicy with plenty of bright cherry fruits. Powerful with a gentle touch. Candied long finish.
What a gem! Unfortunately the winery seems to cease operation. Wonder who owns the Cardiac Hill vineyard, considered by many one of the greatest sites for Syrah in California.

Tasted this about a year ago. This second bottle does not have the wow factor like the first one. The nose is less fragrant and more meaty, and the palate a bit more herbal and angular, which is probably true to the varietal. Still a very complex wine. Have 1 bottle left and hopefully I can keep my hands off for another 2-3 years.
250 cases, and I believe the wine maker for the vintage is Bevan. Bennett Valley is the smallest, and probably the least known Sonoma sub AVA.

The fragrant nose is a tug of war between the bright and floral berry fruits and the brooding dark fruits, sprinkled with cedar, peppery spices, grilled meat, and leather. The palate is broad, round, and yet powerful, with spot on acidity and bitter sweet tannins. Long elegant finish.
With so much power and structure, I was stumped by the 13.2% abv.
The winery’s first winemaker was Andy Smith (of DuMOL), then Michael Browne (of Kosta Browne), and in 2010 turned to Russel Bevan. Admittedly I bought the bottles not knowing the winery, but figured with list of winemakers like this, it can’t be bad. Glad that I still have couple bottles left.

1.5 hour decant. Drank over 2 hours. Suboptimal glassware.
Aromas of smoked meat and very dark fruit, subtle green pepper, black pepper. Has that distinctive herbal/menthol nose of Sonoma Syrah, though less pronounced than other producers.
Light acid and tannins with much more menthol on the palette. Paired well with roast duck.

Scout and I are enjoying a 2010 cardiac hill. The wine from the 2010 cardiac hill is so distinctive it has a heavy meaty nose, black pepper and cherry in the mouth. Falls a little flat in the middle but perks up a little with sour cherry on the finish. 4/27/15
