Dreadnought Waiheke Island Syrah
Mid to deep crimson in colour. Aromas of red berries, a little oak, a bunchie stalky note, spices including nutmeg and a dash of chocolate. Medium plus bodied quite northern Rhone in style more than SA. Not dissimilar to another excellent North Island Syrah as in Trinity Hill, Hawkes Bay. Very good, very tasty. From the unlikely destination of Waiheke Island which is in the middle of Auckland Harbour, which is massive in area compared to Sydney Harbour. One would think the rainfall might be a little high for quality viticulture but not so. Also when you think that one of the best new world Chardonnays in Kumeu River is made just to the north of Auckland.

Jan 17th, 2021Celebrating after Australia’s most famous horse 🐎 race The Melbourne Cup our horse Johannes Vermeer came 2nd by a neck in the Downs Club Calcutta. This Wine from New Zealand was a Northern Rhone style with notes of Meat Bacon Spices and Pepper. Love this medium bodied style finishing with savoury tannins.

Nov 7th, 2017Loving this tonight. Savoury, in a really good way. Cigar box and dusty dark fruit aromas. I've never used the term garrigue, but it seems exactly right here. Wonderful tannin structure. It's a refreshing change from fruit driven wines and worked beautifully with mushroom risotto, providing a savoury backdrop to the more prominent, sweeter notes of the food.

Oct 31st, 2017Very classy stuff. Intense and elegant, with savoury notes and a bit of crunchiness to complement the rich black fruit. The nose is divine, with hints of cocoa. Should age well.
