Still celebrating that LNP win in the Qld State election. Deep crimson with a tawny meniscus. Dense and rich on nose and palate. Blackberry, mocha and dark plum as mentioned in prior notes. Very balanced with nothing protruding. At 34 years of age the oak has totally integrated when in its youth it was prominent, like many Penfolds reds. Supple mouth feel and incredible palate length. Previous notes mention that this was Wine Spectators Wine of the Year and definitely put Grange on the map in the USA. 95% Shiraz, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Unreal! 98 points.

At my 65th last November 2017 at good friends Jim and Vicci Hunter. This Grange was a big hit with Wine Spectator magazine being awarded Wine of the year in the mid 90’s. At this tasting it was showing its pedigree and doing it easily at 27 years of age back then. The oak is not as prominent as it has been. Incredible balance. 2 bottles left from the original dozen. Next in 2020.

The reputation is so amazing that I can't be happy with a complex spicy nose, due mainly to the oak and a palate that drops pretty drastically
Yes it is a 9.1, but I reckon it would not be worth for the effort to source it and what comes out of your pocket
Definitely disappointed

Dusty vanilla mocha dark plum notes. Elegance on the palate despite the ripe year. Harmonious and balanced with silken tannins. A great Grange showing why it is one of the world's iconic Reds. Voted red wine of the year in 1995 by Wine Spectator magazine. Many years left in front of it. Photographed here with its ideal accompaniment - Roast Lamb.

The 1990 vintage. This was Wine Spectators wine of the year and featured on their front cover and very much put Grange on the map in the USA. Strangely I don't believe it has developed as well as expected from its early years. Examples I have had in the past few years were still too oaky IMO. This was more balanced without the expected power from the vintage.

1990 Penfolds Grange. This wine wine won Wine Spectators Wine of the year and put Grange on the map in the USA. Drinking well at 25 years still with a long future from an excellent vintage. Oak is still prominent with coffee and choc malt notes. Great length as you would expect. 18.
