Penfolds
Koonunga Hill Seventy Six Shiraz Cabernet
Dense ruby in colour. Blackberry and mocha aromas - Berry flavours with dark chocolate on the palate - Oak has integrated with the fruit finishing with chalky Tannins. Medium to full bodied. Excellent quality from the second cheapest Penfolds red wine Cuvée and good value - still with a good future. The Cabernet showing itself with a little astringency at the finish. At the Gold Coast.

2 people found it helpfulJun 22nd, 2019It’s fair to say that every Penfolds Cuvée (possibly with the exception of the entry level Rawsons Retreat) is made to cellar. This includes this 2010 Koonunga Hill which cost $16.99. Plummy mocha chocolate notes on nose and palate - showing the Penfolds DNA.

Similar on the medium bodied palate with aniseed and red licorice. The “76” cuvée commemorates the original 1976 Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet. My last bottle which cost $16.99 at the time. Proof again that all Penfolds reds are made to cellar - probably with the exception of the new entry level Rawsons Retreat.

Koonunga Hill used to be Penfolds Entry Level Red and was remarkable how it to could be cellared. The Entry Level is now Rawsons Retreat. Shiraz dominant from the excellent 2010 vintage. Wonderful berry fruit with a touch of Liquorice. Ridiculously good value at $16.99 when I bought it in 2013. At least another 5 years plus of good drinking.

Sep 5th, 2016Wasn't expecting a lot and was pleasantly impressed. Good nose, good structure and lovely notes of dark red fruits, currents and plum. Will continue to improve for another 5 years if not more.
