Rié & Hirofumi Shoji
Pedres Blanques Grenache
100% whole cluster Grenache grown on granite/schist from Collioure/Côtes Catalanes. Zero added sulfur. Made by Rié and Hiro Shoji, a Japanese couple who attended wine school in Beaune and apprenticed with Fred Mugnier and at Domaine de Chassorney, respectively. On the nose/palate: black and blue fruit, strawberry preserves, herbs, and spices. Wine finishes long and with a savory edge. Tannins are very prominent but not harsh. If opening this vintage soon I would suggest a decant of a couple of hours at least.

1 person found it helpfulDec 12th, 2020100% whole cluster Grenache. Slightly on the sweet side for me at first but with time in the glass you seat to get additional notes of black olives following the black and blue fruit. A real votre just full of fun and pleasure! The scarcity of the wine may be causing the wine to be slightly overhyped. Really enjoyed it though! First vintage for the Japanese winemakers in Banyuls.

Oct 23rd, 2020This is very interesting and complex. My birthday wine, it's heavy in the citrus surprisingly, bold lime flavors at the beginning, with ripe dark berries on the mid-palate, devolving into savory, juicy red meat notes. It feels sweet, but ends dry, with a nose of grape soda and black cherry. It's unlike any wine I've had but it's definitely special.

Sep 26th, 2020This wasn’t nearly as open as my first bottle (though it eventually got going with a bit of air). Still elegant and layered, but I will let my remaining bottles sleep for a few yrs...
