Roy Piper
Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
My experience is limited with these wines, but I’ve been fortunate to try a few older vintages (‘10 and ‘12), and absolutely love the videos Roy sends out periodically. Last time he gave an update on the 2014 was late last year (I think?) and recommended an 8hr slow ox. I double decanted this for about 4hrs, then consumed from the bottle over the next 2hrs.
Moulds & GIII vineyards. Deep red/black in the glass, almost purple. Aromatics of ripe mixed berry pie, dark currant, dark chocolate black cherries, and some Christmas spice here. Downright gorgeous on the palate…silky, commanding, rich yet still vibrant. Decadent dark red and black fruits, graphite, sweet espresso and extremely fine grain tannins on the finish. With proper air, this is really delicious.

Fantastic wine. Wow. It was drinking beautifully. Well proportioned, with nice black cherry and blackberry notes. A great graphite/gravel edge. Nice lengthy finish and acidity was really pleasing.

Mar 27th, 2024Followed Roy’s advice on his most recent video and gave this an 8 hour slow-ox. That did the trick as this was drinking really well.

Dec 21st, 2020Cherries. Tannins still ever present. Big fruity bomb of a cabernet. It’s so much about @Roy Piper and his blog and videos as it is with his wines. I enjoy the idiosyncratic nature of both!
