Sandlands
Santa Lucia Highlands Syrah
Santa Lucia Highlands, Central Coast, California, USA

Poured into a decanter about two hours prior to service and enjoyed over the course of several days. Yes…you read that right. This benefitted greatly from air. The 2019 Syrah SLH pours a purple color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears and some fine sediment. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of blackberries, fig, plum, purple flowers, black pepper, animale, black olive brine, dried green herbs, earth and gentle warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose, the finish is medium+ and loaded with minerals. Initially, this was quite pretty on the nose but backward on the palate. After all of the air, it swung into balance and it was beautiful. Drink now with a lot of air and some patience, through 2039+.

Jun 14th, 2026Nursed this bottle over four hours to see how it developed. Flavors are mostly black cherry and red plum fruit leather. Some black pepper character as well. Seed tannins are dominant. The overall impression is age it longer, or decant it for longer than four hours.

Sep 29th, 2024What a beautiful wine! Drinks like a St Joseph with California fruit. Still restrained and only 12.8% alcohol. Very distinctive and throughly enjoyable.
