Staglin Family Vineyard
Rutherford Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, is very clearly the product of the era in which it was made. Inky and deeply extracted, the 2001 saturates the palate with copious blackberry jam, chocolate, spice and sweet oak from the 100% new barrels used at the time. The 2001 is not an especially elegant or nuanced wine, but it has aged well and has another decade of life ahead of it, maybe more. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, April 2023)

Apr 13th, 2023Last and best bottle of the 12-case. Aromatically insane - licorice, roses, Rutherford dust - ahead of a fully resolved, velvety palate of saddle leather, dark chocolate, dark red and purple fruit and completely melted tannins. 60 second tail (or more). As previously noted, more than acceptable bottle variation in the case, but this gem was worth it all...

Sep 22nd, 2020Penultimate bottle from a case of 12, bottle variation is crazy. Where the last was quite mature, this seemed just bottled, almost parallel to the ‘07 open beside it. Dry and laden with dark chocolate, black currant and baking spice. Had a Bordeaux vibe the ‘07 didn’t. Beautiful.

Aug 26th, 2017Almost 2 yrs ago I wrote: "Half way through a case and the romance deepens. Giant scorched earth and oiled leather nose. Epic battle of extracted dark-red fruit sweetness and a light juicy acidity. All in a smooth-as-silk package. Ageing so gracefully, 10+ years from peaking." After last night I'll add: probably peaked after 2 hr decant, no need to wait but this has the tannins and pure extracted fruit to take it at least 10 more years.

Feb 12th, 2017This is great. Darker than the 02 caymus but longer finish, more intense, subtle secondary flavors coming out and a amazing wine
