Casale del Giglio

Antium Bellone 2024

ANTHIUM 2024, Bellone, Lazio IGP, Italy 🇮🇹

Overview
100% Bellone from Lazio, crafted by Casale del Giglio. An indigenous grape with ancient Roman roots, bottled at 14% ABV and expressing the full tropical and mineral personality of this historic variety.

Aromas & Flavors
Explosive tropical aromatics, mango, papaya, ripe pineapple, and golden peach — leap from the glass with remarkable intensity. Beneath the exuberant fruit lies a subtle mineral undertone that keeps everything focused and grounded.

Mouthfeel
Textured, vibrant, and rhythmically expressive. The palate mirrors the nose with precision, delivering layered tropical richness balanced by freshness. The finish lingers confidently, long and resonant without heaviness.

Food Pairings
Grilled prawns, Caribbean-spiced fish, roasted chicken with citrus glaze, burrata with stone fruit, or saffron seafood risotto.

Verdict
A show-stopping indigenous white that commands attention. Profound aromatics, dimensional palate, and unforgettable persistence. This is not just impressive, this is emotional wine.

🍷 Personal Pick
Yes. This is a 2-bottle strategy candidate. One to relive the shock. One to cellar and remember exactly where you were when Lazio changed your axis.

Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Paired this with some Axis quinoa stir fry. Absolutely awesome. A little bit of earth with cherry and lots of red fruit. Not too acidic. I hope I run into this bottle again. — 8 years ago

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend

[from 750] drinking very well right now (2018). Indescribable? Taste from some other axis of space-time-sense? Custard, melon, pineapple, diesel, bandaid, orange spice. . . — 8 years ago

Axis Mundi Tannat 2002

Pretty deep ruby /garnet core , lightening though not a lot at the edges , very big thick slow legs. Certainly secondary aromas now, ceder , licorice , blackcurrant with a meaty undertone , quite interesting and complex . In the mouth more of the blackcurrant fruit, minty notes also , then the tannins kick in. They are ripe but omnipresent , almost a cocoa powder finish with the drying tannins. The mid palate is slightly hollow and lacks a bit of charm. This is a big wine though the acidity is balancing I'm not sure those tannins will ever be resolved. It doesn't come as 'new world' you would think it could be a left bank Bordeaux , a St Estephe perhaps, though the sweeter tannins and slightly alcoholic kick give away another origin. Coming back to this , I think there will probably be limited upside , the wine appear too hollow to really improve. So drink now and over the next 3 years . — 8 years ago

Ha,@Stanley Barrios, I didn’t even notice until I was taking the picture. It didn’t negatively impact the wine in any way and that’s what counts!

Trout Gulch Vineyard Pinot Noir 2014

This is on another flavor axis from many CA pinots we have enjoyed lately - a balance of black cherry and cola (the bark complexities - not the syrup). As wonderful as it is now, suspect it will be a mind blower down the road. — 9 years ago
