Château Picque Caillou

Blanc Pessac-Léognan Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2020

2020 vintage. One of the estates that are so close to the city of Bordeaux that you might call them urban wineries. Luckily, some very famous estates (ever heard of Haut-Brion?!) are a perfect barrier to urbanisation. While nowhere near the quality of its more illustrious neighbours, the 2020 white Picque Caillou is definitely worth our attention. It is not clear whether this is 100% Sauvignon Blanc, or a blend with some Sémillon, but on day one it smelled very much like Sauvignon Blanc, while on day two more exotic fruit popped up ( which I normally associate more with Sémillon, but maybe there isn't any in the blend). Light golden colour. Pineapple, grapefruit, and a hint of fennel and beeswax. In the mouth it is more about intensity than elegance, but it definitely has character. Abv. 13%. The estate was just bought by Laurent Marti, a business man who made his fortune in textiles, and who owns the local rugby club. — 5 days ago
