A lot of wood, vanilla and leather on the nose, with notes of black cherry preserves and musty book binding interspersed within. Color reflects only hints of the age with mostly cherry red depth with hints of orange to the edges of the medium to full body. Palate is leaner than you’d expect, right a lot of acid and energy still cooled after a 3hr decant. The cherry fruit seems to come forth first, with some slate like chalky minerality pushed forth between still-slightly grippy tannin. The flavor pushes further into leather, cedar wood, VERY dark butter chocolate, pickled root vegetables and a tingling, slightly tarry like flavor that persists to the end. Marvelous 22-year old #rioja just shows how proper storage from a volume producer can yield so much enjoyment in a relatively inexpensive bottle. Opened and poured slightly cooled. Immediate bouquet much fresher than expected, crunchy red fruit, black tea, dried flowers. Acidity still vibrant on palate but red/black berry fruit was muted, as expected, but tannins had softened to a delicate texture. After 20-30 minutes in the glass the nose changed markedly with caramel, marzipan tertiary notes drifting out. Aged Rioja is an excellent flexible food-paring wine and proved ideal for a premium steakhouse experience.. Bacon-wrapped shrimp tasted delicious with this wine. — 4 years ago
