The Conscious Collection: A Virtual Fine Wine and Spirits Auction

Like all of you, we have been extremely saddened by the toll COVID-19 has taken on the hospitality industry. We have seen countless friends and colleagues suddenly out of work and facing extraordinary uncertainty during these challenging and unprecedented times. Vinous has joined forces with Southern Glazer’s, Zachys and the Wine Spectator to sponsor The Conscious Collection, a truly once-in-a-lifetime charity auction to help those in need. I have personally curated a number of the lots, which run the gamut from incredible trips to unforgettable experiences to the finest in wine. Our goal is to raise in excess of $1m. Online bidding is open now. Guy Fieri, Dave Portnoy and I will co-host the live auction on April 9 starting at 6pm EDT. It will be an amazing evening. Restaurants play an incredibly vital role in our lives. They are where we celebrate milestones, spend time with our loved ones and do business. Please join us in helping those in need. Antonio Galloni Vinous Founder and CEO ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ We’ve gathered a selection of notes on the various auction wines from the Delectable community! Cheers!

Château Margaux

Premier Grand Cru Classé Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 1982

9.7

Last week was a combo of 4th Friday and Open That Bottle Night on back to back nights. Needless to say, the lineup between both days was full of heavy hitters, so I’m only posting standout bottles.

In the running for top red wine of OTBN. I’ve had Chateau Margaux three times before, and they’ve all been the ‘82. Not sure how I lucked in to that. Didn’t need long to blow off its funk. Almost ethereal in profile. Light in regards to expectations, and then as it lingers it snaps your head back with wide eyes. Delicate flowers like roses and violets accompanied by juniper, herbs de Provence, dried black cherries, pipe tobacco and soft raspberry fig. Amazingly acidic and tannic at 38yrs young. Saddle leather, dates, blackberries, currant, underbrush and high percentage raspberry infused dark cocoa. Magnificent.

1982 Margaux is the best red I have ever had outside of Burgundy.

Lovely and open. Some hints of tobacco with dark blue fruit and open knit red fruit. Persistent and deep. Really lovely — 6 years ago

Great showing! Perfectly aged, with secondary aromas of fading flowers and dried sage, yet still vivid and bursting with life. Pretty stuff. — 9 years ago

Opus One

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1980

Thia bottle was opened at Valette in Healdsburg, CA. Chef Dustin prepared a special matching tasting menu to pair with this beauty. The genius of crafting wine that tastes so good some 37 years after the fact still boggles the mind. Smooth glycerine integration of cedary petrol notes complemented fresh cut camomile flower and ripe cherries - I mean what? How did these youthful notes survive after all these years. Such an incredible wine. — 7 years ago
