Music and Wine: December 2019

Welcome to Delectable's column, Music and Wine! If you’re on the lookout for newly released music, grab your headphones. If you’re searching for a fresh bottle, grab your glass. And if you’re looking for the perfect wine to pair with that pop song you can't stop playing on repeat, then sit back, relax, and enjoy these Delectable tunes. Each month, we gather a playlist of newly released songs and pair them with wines that hit all the right notes. Listen on Spotify Now 1. Oblivion – Labrinth feat. Sia If you’ve watched HBO’s hit show Euphoria, then you’ve heard the voice of Labrinth who scored the show. “Oblivion” off of his newest album, Imagination & the Misfit Kid isn’t the first time he and Sia have come together. You can find their other collaborations under the name LSD with fellow artist Diplo. Strings and Labrinth’s voice start us off with a slow build of both. Interestingly, Sia’s powerhouse vocals never come centerstage, but her recognizable sound can be heard here and there throughout the background of the song. The post-chorus that consists of lots of “yeahs” from Labrinth and the line “I need you to knock me out” from Sia is where all instruments and vocals come together to offer the song’s musical sweet spot. Dive into oblivion with Labrinth and Sia and a bottle of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend . 2. Supalonely – BENEE feat. Gus Dapperton If you’re wondering what the indie-loving Gen-Z kids are listening to these days, chances are they’ve been enjoying the chill-pop beats from newest alt-indie darling BENEE following her almost overnight success with “Soaked”, released just last year. With the release of her EP STELLA & STEVE, this New Zealand-based artist proves she’s here to stay. Upbeat song “Supalonely” features lyrics that flow smoothly with an almost borderline rap feel, packing in a lot of familiar teenage angst — feeling alone, feeling like it’s your fault, and a general sense of self-deprecation. Whether you’re feeling sentimental about your angsty teenage years or you’re just enjoying BENEE’s fun beats, we suggest pairing this with a natural wine from Germany, such as 2Naturkinder Drei Freunde Bacchus Blend . If you’re also steeping in your loneliness, at least this aptly named wine (translates to “3 Friends”) can keep you company! 3. Time Alone With You – Jacob Collier feat. Daniel Caesar If you’re desperately looking for new music to listen to and want to completely revamp your music library, Jacob Collier and his 50 songs are here to help. Since December 2018, Collier has been releasing portions of Djesse, a four-volume project that covers various music genres and brings together a cast of global artists. With both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 released, Collier is gearing up to release Vol. 3 in Spring 2020. Ahead of this release, Collier teamed up with Daniel Caesar to bring the Djesse followers “Time Alone With You”. This song takes you on a journey and instead of trying to explain it, we are going to recommend you just press play and grab some Highland Park Distillery Aged 12 Years Single Malt Scotch Whisky . Once you finish your glass, pour another and dive into the rest of Collier’s collection. 4. Let It Roll – Lewis Capaldi Two years ago, now 23 year old, Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi caught the attention of UK audiences with the release of his song “Bruises” and has been climbing the charts ever since, all the while gaining a larger following in the US. Often compared to Adele, Capaldi is making himself known for heartbreak songs. Capaldi recently released the extended edition of his debut album, Divinely Uninspired To a Hellish Extent, which proves itself as the quintessential breakup album. The final track, “Let It Roll” hits you with the lyrics: “Tried to reach you, tried to call / I bang my head against your door / But there ain’t nobody home”. Like we said, it’s a quintessential breakup album. Grab your tissues and a wine from the Veneto region. Why Veneto? Any of our Shakespeare fans know why Verona is the city of heartbreak? Wherefore art thou a glass of Giuseppe Quintarelli Recioto della Valpolicella Classico Corvina Blend ? 5. Texas Sun – Khruangbin & Leon Bridges Hop in your car, roll down the windows, and drive until the sun sets. This title track off Khruangbin & Leon Bridges’ forthcoming EP captures the essence of the summer sun warming your arm while it’s hanging out the car window one late afternoon. Both the group Khruangbin and artist Leon Bridges are from Texas and are, if this song gives any sign, going to release the perfect road trip EP. If you’re searching for a song that you’ll play at the end of a long day when everyone has piled in the car and silence fills the air as the day’s energy has come and gone, then look no further than “Texas Sun”. Make it to your destination and pop a bottle of Texan wine, maybe the Lightsome Wines Touriga Nacional , and press repeat on this sunset song. 6. Can’t Fight This Feeling – Bastille feat. London Contemporary Orchestra Technically “Can’t Fight This Feeling” was released in 1984; however, a cover of this REO Speedwagon classic was recently released by the well-known, English band Bastille in collaboration with the London Contemporary Orchestra. Bastille left the recognizable 80s sound and guitar solo behind, instead choosing to build on the original piano notes with added strings from the London Contemporary Orchestra. To those who are fans of the original, give this contemporary version a shot with a Tuscan blend that offers soft tannins to match smooth quality of the song. Maybe a glass of Marchesi Antinori Tenuta Guado al Tasso Il Bruciato Bolgheri Super Tuscan Blend . 7. Give me the Night – Des Rocs According to his socials, alt-rocker Des Rocs really wants to “bring rock n roll back” and he’s certainly off to a strong start. He burst onto the scene in November 2018 with his first EP Let the Vultures In and amassed over 28 million streams over the year on the track “Let Me Live / Let Me Die”. His newest EP, Martyr Parade will have you reaching for your leather jacket and wishing you had a motorcycle to ride into the sunset on. Fast-paced hit “Give Me the Night” is a perfect example, and while the lyrics are at times a little questionable (“Rex tyrannosaurus, you’re the king of everyone”), you’ll still find yourself trying to sing along by the second listen. We don’t think there’s any other drink more fitting to enjoy this song with than a smooth and full bodied stout, and you can dream about going full throttle on the speedway to it while you sip AleSmith Brewing Company Speedway Stout . 8. All Is On My Side – Sam Fender Singer-songwriter Sam Fender has released a new/old easy-rock song called "All is On My Side". While a new release, the song is reportedly one of the oldest songs in his repertoire, having played it consistently at live shows but never releasing a studio version. Its eventual release was prompted by fan petitions. The song is somewhat tamer compared to his newer tunes, but that doesn't make it any less exciting. Guitars, drums, and even a bit of sax fuse together seamlessly to create a song that sounds both fresh and reminiscent of the 80s. What better wine to celebrate this song with than a classic varietal with a new-age twist like Pinot Noir? We suggest a Central Otago Pinot Noir . Listen to last month’s playlist here .

Lightsome Wines

Touriga Nacional 2018

Four months ago I visited the exciting newcomer to Texas and our first serious natural wine shop - Southold Cellars. Our spring allocation tasting was led by Adrienne Ballou, assistance winemaker. After I left, I learned Adrienne was just about to release her second vintage under her personal side project, Lightsome. I didn’t give it much thought but recently was persuaded to try her Tourigo Nacional.

I’m really stunned. This is easily the best Texas wine I’ve tried. It’s not even close really. And I’d be surprised if Adrienne recognized how good this is.

The aromatics are stunning and elegant. What you get from the best Cru Beaujolais. Sour wild blueberries, macerated raspberries, and iodine. Significant stem inclusion - it’s the flesh of Gamay and personality of cool climate Syrah. I can’t wait for what’s next from Adrienne.

Side note: I since learned Eric Texier went bananas for this wine at our WildWorld Fest in Austin this year. I’m not crazy

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2012

Rather suddenly, and without much explanation, Bordeaux found itself in the middle of my crosshairs as being the next place I wanted to conduct a deep dive in. With this shift in my general attention from New World to Old World I began to do more research on the various appellations, prominent chateaus, and nuances of Left Bank and Right Bank, as well as compile a spreadsheet highlighting specific bottles I wanted to seek out. For a reason unbeknownst to me, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou was the producer I wanted to start my deep dive with. I researched the history of the chateaux, learned about their wines, priced out vintages that were immediately available for my acquisition, and added it to my Bordeaux spreadsheet, waiting for the time to pull the trigger and purchase a bottle (or two) to start the trek with. As far as wines are concerned it was all I could think about: Ducru-Beaucaillou. Apparently, the mere act of researching a chateau left me beguiled, craving a wine I had never even had before! With all of this research in mind I’ve learned over the years that as much as I thoroughly enjoy researching and trying wine, it’s certainly more enjoyable to share the knowledge and the experiences with others. Enter @codyuzzel, who has heard more than his fair share of my wine ramblings over the years. One day we began discussing Bordeaux, Left Bank v. Right bank, and changes in our thought patterns about the region over the years, which eventually lead him to asking the million-dollar question: Are there any producers you’ve highlighted that you’re particularly interested in? I told him that Ducru-Beaucaillou was in my crosshairs, along with a handful of other producers that I’d explore once I’d tried Ducru. That’s when he texted me the picture; a picture of him holding a glorious bottle of 2012 Ducru-Beaucaillou. “I took this pic before we started this conversation.” Given the serendipitous nature of this occurrence he extended an invitation to pop the cork upon our next meeting, which is interesting in and of itself given that I had been thinking about visiting him at the wine bar just earlier that day. It’s moments like these that truly make the wine journey a sweet and rewarding one. Thanks, Cody, for your generosity and epic invitations.

Burn Cottage

Moonlight Race Central Otago Pinot Noir 2015

I am enjoying sampling PN's from different regions...Central Otago offers some nice selections..as always vintage depending...but I have found the 2015's to be quite nice!
This wine is New World in style...damp earth..mushrooms..bing cherry..mild oak...nutmeg..cinnamon...mild acidity..presents with a decent long finish!

Revisiting this post vacuum pumped and put in the fridge...this has opened up even more...enjoying the earthiness of this wine!

@Dawn E. Such a beautiful region and area for Pinot’s. If you haven’t had, Felton Road or Rippon, they are Central Otago producers worth seeking out. 👍 Cheers! 🍷

Rippon, darker, more brooding and Felton Road lighter with more bright red fruits.

Highland Park Distillery

Aged 12 Years Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Nose of baked apple dipped in vodka, with hint of peat and menthol, and a touch of oily aldehyde. Taste is surprisingly smooth. Nice honey flowering note, just a tiny bit of spice and zest, some stringent gasoline, and wood chips. What a smooth beauty as a young bottle. I will have her every evening. — 7 years ago
