Music and Wine: July 2020

Welcome to Delectable's column, Music and Wine! If you’re on the lookout for newly released music, grab your headphones. If you’re searching for a fresh bottle, grab your glass. And if you’re looking for the perfect wine to pair with that pop song you can't stop playing on repeat, then sit back, relax, and enjoy these Delectable tunes. Each month, we gather a playlist of newly released songs and pair them with wines that hit all the right notes. Listen on Spotify Now 1. Tough Pill – Izzy Bizu “You run my heart over like a bulldozer” sets the tone for Izzy Bizu’s latest single, “Tough Pill”. Jealousy, jealousy, jealousy. Even if you do not consider yourself a jealous person, you’ve most likely had a few experiences with this complex emotion. And as Bizu sings, jealousy is a tough pill to swallow. Whether you’re jealous of an ex meeting someone new or get jealous just at the thought, it’s difficult to ignore these feelings that someone does not care for you or might be caring for someone else. What can you do to help process these feelings? You can turn up the volume on Bizu’s new single and pop a bottle of Syrah . 2. Ferris Wheel – Sylvan Esso Whether you choose to label Sylvan Esso as an Electro-pop duo or opt for Synth-folk, there’s no denying that Sylvan Esso has such a distinctive sound that is identifiable from the first note. This latest release off their forthcoming third studio album is no exception. We’re still in summer, so we’re allowed to keep labeling songs “summer songs”. Just listen to “Ferris Wheel” or watch the accompanying music video that takes place on an actual ferris wheel, and you won’t roll your eyes at us because it is in fact a summer song. It’s upbeat; it’s incredibly danceable; it’s the Sylvan Esso we love. So grab a bottle of bubbles, but make it pink. Maybe a Cava Brut Rosé ? 3. I Shouldn’t Ghost My Therapist – Liza Anne Who says songs that discuss serious topics such as mental health have to be enveloped in a slow tempo and ballad-esque piano notes? What if you had to listen a little bit harder to lyrics that are backed by a solid base line and beachy sound that trick you into dancing around in the sand? Liza Anne gives us a buoyant bop with “I Shouldn’t Ghost My Therapist”; however, lyrics such as, “I can’t keep going on like this / Gonna run away all my friends” indicate that the narrator might be struggling while simultaneously dancing around the room. Liza Anne’s humor mixed with a lively tune remind us that sometimes we just need to turn up the music and laugh a little, while processing our current state and figuring out how to move forward. All while drinking a glass of Chablis Chardonnay . 4. Sour Flower – Lianne La Havas Acceptance and a sense of relief flow in the wind around you as you listen to “Sour Flower” off of Lianne La Havas latest album. La Havas sings the lines “No more / Looking out for someone else but me” and “You can find me dancing on my own”. A calm feeling washes over you as you listen to La Havas sing about coming home, deciding to invest in yourself, and looking out for you and your own personal growth. With three minutes remaining, La Havas stops singing and lets the instruments take over. It’s as if this instrumental invites the listener to take a moment for introspection and meditation. Once you finish your self-reflection, take a sip of a Loire Chenin Blanc . 5. Let It Go – Summer Walker Not even ten months after releasing her debut album, Over It, Summer Walker gives us a five track EP that dives into love, relationships, and heartbreak. Starting off with “Let It Go”, Walker sets the scene for a relationship where you are so in love with your partner that you don’t see who they truly are and continue to ignore the issues within the relationship. Walker’s voice takes the lead on this smooth track backed by an acoustic guitar allowing the lyrics to fully come through. This song acts as the friend sitting next to you on the couch who is gently telling you that it’s time to let the relationship go. While the idea of letting go of someone you love is heartbreaking, by the end of this song, you feel a sense of acceptance and desire to move forward. Sit back and get ready to let it go with a glass of Oregon Grenache in hand. 6. Heat Waves – Glass Animals Take a moment and listen to this song up until about 20 seconds. Go ahead, we’ll wait. Did you immediately start moving your shoulders as soon as the beat dropped? We did too. “Heat Waves” is one of five songs already released off of Glass Animals newest album, Dreamland, which will be fully available in August. A common characteristic throughout the Glass Animals discography seems to be a shoulder-moving beat. Yes, they’re danceable tunes, but they’re specifically shoulder moving tunes. If you’ve listened to the full song, you’ll know what we mean. Similar to Liza Anne, frontman Dave Bayley is singing about thinking of someone you miss and want to be with but know you can’t/shouldn’t be with. Sad, right? Yet, you can’t help but scream the lyrics and smile at the same time. Pair this song with a wine that has some heat of its own. Perhaps a Napa Zinfandel ? Listen to last month’s playlist here .

Howell Mountain Zinfandel 2015

Yea, digging this. Lush blackberry and blueberry fruit, a touch pruny but not over the top. Cigar tobacco, pepper and some heat to round it out. Delicious — 4 years ago

Domaine du Viking

Tendre Vouvray Chenin Blanc 2013

Dinner with a friend, brief notes this evening.

Prior notes still apply:
Nose has warmed Granny Smith apple with butter.
Palate had serious zingy acidity to start, but since subsided, now a combo of yellow/green apple, water chestnut and a minerally honey.

Last bottle, amazing, still has many years ahead!

48 Hour Update:
Nose has fried green apples, brown butter, toasted honey, caramel candy, dried apricots, cold green herbs and white flowers.
Palate has tart yellow apple, caramel sauce, saturated oak board, honey, water chestnuts, tart peach jam, Jasmine flowers, with medium acidity and intense finish, lightly drying, very powerful.
We should have opened all the prior bottles two days in advance, this is just approaching the pinnacle of its enjoyment, wow. Enjoy now or the next 2-4 years, from proper storage. Updating from 92 to 94 points.

Comtesse de Ligny Chablis Chardonnay 2018

Beautiful example of classic Chablis! Fresh, clean and lively. Complex aromas and flavors of apple, lemon and mineral. Hints of cilantro and grapefruit. Long and elegant finish. Excellent! Reasonably priced too.

Brut Cava Pinot Noir Rosé

If you don’t want to think about this wine, no problem, you’ll have fun. If you do there’s a lot to cogitate on. The Animaniacs of wine. It has complexity (intriguing watermelon/river stone/candied watermelon/underripe strawberry/strawberry leaf) but also is just so pleasant in a way that I think: oh a non-wine snob would adore this too. Bubs are plush albeit don’t last so long as I might yearn for but then is that what I got for pouring into a syrah glass? You tell me Riedel lovers. — 4 years ago

The Barrel Project Scorched Earth Vineyard Grenache 2013

13’ Roots Wine Company The Barrel Project Grenache.
Red hue color. Let it open up in the glass for 10 minutes. Juicy & ripe, this bursts open with a flavorful rich fruity cherry compote & red licorice spice. It's light bodied & ready for near-term drinking, and yet has the acid backing to age a couple more years.

The Hermit Syrah 2015

Decanted for 30 minutes. Smells like a diabetic attack waiting to happen. Sweet Tart candy aromas that my 2 and 4 yr olds are jealous of haha. On the palate, raspberries, and pomegranate with some bright acidity and balanced tannins. Very enjoyable. — 6 years ago
