Each month, we gather a playlist of newly released songs and pair them with wines that hit all the right notes. Listen on Spotify Now 1. Blinding Lights Remix – The Weeknd ft. ROSALÍA It’s unlikely since the release of his album, After Hours, at the beginning of 2020, that you have not heard "Blinding Lights" at least once this year. Whether it appeared on your New Release Radar, you heard it on the radio, or watched one of the various TikToks made to this song, this song from The Weeknd has had a distinct presence throughout 2020. To further confirm this, Spotify revealed that “Blinding Lights” was the most streamed song of 2020. And if you haven’t heard the song, you can now jump in with the most recent remix featuring ROSALÍA. Overall, the song sounds fairly similar to his original release; however, ROSALÍA opens and closes the song offering it a bit of a refreshed sound. We recommend grabbing a glass of Burgundy Chardonnay and streaming both the remix and the original. 2. Love Somebody – Rotimi If you’re waiting for someone you know to get out of their own way, waiting for a complex decision to be made, or even an indecisive person yourself, then Rotimi’s latest release will feel like a much needed chat. With lines such as, “When will you stop standing in your own way?” and “Your happiness is right in your face” and “So why do we make things difficult? / Running away from beautiful”, you’ll start to question if you could be overcomplicating a decision and standing in the way of your own happiness. A simple decision does not have to be considered a bad thing. Grab a glass of a Charbono Blend and relax while listening to “Love Somebody” and try to enjoy the simple joys. 3. If We Make It Through December – Phoebe Bridgers After releasing her second album in June and an EP in late November, Phoebe Bridgers gifts her listeners with a Holiday EP to help make it through the end of the year. First up on the EP is Bridgers’ cover of Merle Haggard’s “If We Make It Through December”. With a year like 2020, this cover comes at a fitting moment. While the sombre piano and uncertainty of the narrator give a sad air to the song, Bridgers’ voice combined with the lyrics find the beauty in melancholy and there is a sliver of hope to be found when looking towards making it to the other side of December. For this tune, we recommend a bourbon whiskey that can stand up against the cold of December. 4. I’m Here – Celeste Contrasting the indecisive and overcomplicating character in “Love Somebody” at the top of the playlist, Celeste’s newest single brings us a questioning yet sure individual. Celeste sings, “I know you’ll be here when I look ‘round / Keeping your eyes on me” indicating that she trusts the person she sings about to always be there and remain for a lifetime. And with the lyrics, “Everyday, till then I’ll have questions / Must be a fault in my design”, Celeste sings as if she’ll always have questions, yet while she has questions, there is a solid foundation that she does not question. Celeste’s upcoming album, Not Your Muse is set to release late February 2021. While you wait for the album and listen to her latest single on repeat, we recommend grabbing a mature wine that has the potential to hold for a few years to come. Maybe an Australian Riesling . 5. Don’t Be a Fool – Dreamer Boy Easy-going, relaxed, and a beachy vibe are the words to describe Dreamer Boy’s latest single. A song that reminds us of summer love as we’re headed into winter. Dreamer Boy sings about a girl that he needs to confess his love for, otherwise, the moment will pass him by, and his chance will be lost forever. He sings, “Don’t be a fool / I know you’re waiting for the right time”. There are certain moments in life where we wish we spoke up instead of waiting for a “perfect” time that might not necessarily occur. While the song itself is not groundbreaking, it’s a fun song to save for next summer’s playlist and a good reminder to speak your mind. Listen to this with a chilled Ribera del Duero Tempranillo in hand. 6. Drive On – Charlotte Clark Charlotte Clark released her debut single in July of this year and recently released her second single “Drive On”. Clark sings about a moment when you’re unsure of whether you should stay in your relationship, or if it is time to move on. This specific moment in a relationship comes with contrasting emotions and quite a bit of back and forth. Clark sings, “But if we parted / I’d be half-hearted / So I’ll leave a light on / If he goes marching / I’ll be watching / I won’t be the one to drive on”. Relationships go through those ups and downs, but at the end of the day, if you know you don’t want it to end, then you won’t be the one to drive on; it turns into a bit of a waiting game.
