Diamonds – Sam Smith No stranger to breakup songs, Sam Smith releases their third album, Love Goes which focuses on, you guessed it, post-breakup mentalities. Apathy, loneliness, nostalgia, etc. can all be found within Smith’s lyrics and hiding behind the high energy pop beats. “Diamonds” represents the “I’m trying to get over my ex and show them that I don’t care they left” energy felt when you go out with friends post-breakup; however, lyrics such as “You’re never gonna hear my heart break” and “When you’re not here I can breathe” also point to the stage where you realize you are better off without your ex. Whatever stage you’re in or even if you’re not trying to get over an ex, this song is danceable and fun and pairs well with a Loire Chenin Blanc . 2. Redwood Tree – Cam Time, what a complicated yet straightforward aspect of life. Country singer, Cam highlights the passing of time in the first track off her sophomore album, “Redwood Tree”. Cam sings, “Don’t know what you have when you’re young / But you’ll know what you had when it’s gone”. It seems that in the blink of an eye, we’re older, our parents are older, and sometimes it’s hard to recognize yourself after the passage of so much time. While discussing time can send anyone into existential crisis mode, there is a sense of comfort and reality that can be found within Cam’s lyrics. However, if you are starting to feel an existential crisis coming, we recommend a glass of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that gets better with time to help get you through. 3. Maybe – Aby Coulibay Aby Coulibay’s latest single personifies laying on a blanket in the park and staring up at the sky with a cool breeze blowing. Self-love and getting to a place where you feel the most yourself are up for discussion throughout this slow jam. Appropriately titled, Coulibay sings about “maybe” getting to a place one day where she lives as her true self as confidently and unapologetically as possible. For this song, you need a wine that is as unapologetic as the future self of this singer. We recommend a California Tempranillo . 4. Chasing a Feeling – Léon Calm, honest, hopeful, and sad are the descriptors that immediately come to mind when listening through the fifth track off Léon’s latest release. Have you ever been stuck in purgatory when it comes to a relationship? You’re still together, but it’s just not working anymore and you’re wondering if you can get back to the way things once were or if the next best thing to do is end the relationship. Léon sings, “How do you know you know? How can you seem so sure?” conveying to the listener that this state of indecisiveness can cause pain to both sides. Grab a bottle of German Riesling to help you think things through. 5. FIND ME. – Xavier Omär Contrasting the breakup songs and indecisiveness of other songs on this month’s playlist, Xavier Omär brings listeners a song that is grounded in love and confidence. On this first track of his latest release, Omär sings, “No matter mountains / No matter valleys / Your love will find me”. Lyrics woven together with moments focused solely on the beat and then switches over to focus on the guitar brings forward a love song with depth in the lyrics and in the music itself. Omär sings about a love that won’t be stopped by the past or any events life throws its way. For this, we suggest a confident wine. Maybe a Sonoma Petite Sirah ? 6. In My Arms – Babeheaven Ahead of their debut album release set for the end of November, Babeheaven have released five songs off their 14-track album. You’ll feel like you’re floating through the clouds a bit while listening to “In My Arms”, and we’re not just saying that because the album cover art depicts fluffy clouds in a beautiful blue sky. The lead singer’s voice stays fairly consistent throughout adding to the calming, almost trance-like quality of this tune. “In My Arms” highlights getting to know another person and “getting closer to the bones” of someone you want to know and love on a deeper level.
