Where to begin? The Château Ausone 2000 recalls some of my top red Burgundy's—wines of this caliber have an otherworldly quality, that can only be described as an ethereal, gossamer, and transcendent. Complex, evolving layers of black currants, ripe blueberries, gravelly earth, iron, olives, sweet tobacco, violets, camphor, and even a touch of dried honey. It's as multidimensional on the palate, like some living thing with a precise, delineated core, and intersecting mineral tones wound around fine tannins. — 9 years ago

The 2018 Domaine de la Bastide Blanche Rosé is absolutely stunning. Composed of predominately Mourvèdre, with the remaining Grenache and Cinsault, this begins with gorgeous aromas of fresh white peaches, strawberries, lemon zest, orange blossoms, crushed stones and a light dusting of dried herbs that all come together beautifully. On the palate this is bright, vivid and beautifully textured, with remarkable overall precision and balance all the way through the mouth watering finish. This Rosé has it all, and it will be extremely difficult to come across a more compelling Rosé in this price range. — 5 years ago

A phenomenal Barolo 1994, blend of Brunate & Le Coste crus, made by the venerable hardcore traditionalist Giuseppe Rinaldi in his garage-looking cantina just outside Barolo village.

Looked and felt amazing. Violets and truffle oil go hand-in-hand with jammy dark fruit, delicate and harmonious at 23 years of age. Incredible depth in a mesmerizing multilayered palate, like a rich cake made of 10 different kinds of chocolate.

Extremely nice of our host Heidi to Coravin some of their flagship wine, Kanonkop Black Label. This was my first time having their Black Label and it didn’t disappoint. It is only one of two bottles I brought back. I couldn’t pass on the trade price Heidi was nice enough to extend to us.

The nose shows very dark currants and dark expresso roast. Blackberries, black raspberries, black plum, dark cherries, cocoa powder, saline, dark chocolate, caramel, mocha, vanilla, cinnamon, Black licorice, dry top soil, underbrush, dark, rich soils, touch of mint, sweet tarry notes with dark, blue and red amazingly fragrant florals.

The body is full and thick. Dark, meaty, powdery, sticky tannins. Used expresso roast grounds, steeped black tea, blackberries, black raspberries, black plum, raspberries, dark cherries, cocoa powder, saline, dark chocolate, caramel, mocha, vanilla, cinnamon, black licorice, iodine notes, dry top soil, underbrush, crushed granite powder, dark, rich soils, touch of mint, sweet tarry notes with dark, blue and red amazingly fragrant florals. The acidity is near perfect. The finish is juicy fruit driven, elegant, well balanced and delicious. It is impressive and can’t wait to try it again in 10 plus years.
