Wine Bloggers Conference 2018: An Adventure in Wine

The Wine Bloggers Conference is heading back to Walla Walla this year (after being there in 2010) for one simple reason: location. Situated in the middle of several of the northwest’s prime grape growing regions and home to dozens of wineries, Walla Walla boasts over 40 tasting rooms right in the middle of this quaint, rural town. Attendees of the Wine Bloggers Conference will be able to experience all that Walla Walla has to offer over the 3-day program, with several pre- and post-conference excursions offering even more local experiences. The conference will feature not only Washington wines but wines from all over the world and wine bloggers will have the opportunity to post about wines throughout the program. Led by Master Sommeliers, Masters of Wine and other leading experts in the wine industry, the Discovery Sessions allow participants to dive deep into wines from a region or a single producer. The Education Sessions are designed to explore a varietal or wine region, with emphasis on the more technical aspects of the wine. Breakout Sessions throughout the conference will give participants the tools to hone their craft, focusing on such topics as copyright issues, media kits and advanced social media strategies. Keynote speaker Lewis Purdue will talk about becoming a journalist blogger and we will be discussing the differences (and similarities) between a wine blogger and wine influencer. But it is not all work – the dinner excursions and live wine blogging sessions put plenty of fun into the mix. The Mystery Dinner Excursions feature a special night out at a local winery and the Live Wine Blogging events will introduce attendees into the chaos of live wine blogging. Whether you are reconnecting with old friends or meeting new ones, one thing is definite: you will experience a true adventure in wine in Walla Walla! Discounted registration available here

Walla Walla Vintners

Pepper Bridge Vineyard Malbec 2012

This just keeps getting better the longer we keep this. Mellowed our a bit, nice and smooth with a pepper/vanilla kick at the end. Hints of blackberry tucked in there too. So nice. — 6 years ago

àRose Estate Rose Blend 2017

Estate Rose Syrah. Very light pink, excellent clarity. Notes of red fruit, flowers, dust, sage and Provencal herbs. Cherry flavor with length, dry, lemon-orange finish with slight skin astringency. "Lightly done" seems to be the design principle, but there is a lot of fruit and varietal expression running through this wine. Paired interestingly (imperfectly) with Humboldt Fog goat chèvre cheese and woven wheat (Triscuit) crackers. Pricey, so you should expect more value delivered. Bad pairing on my part, but pretty good rose. — 6 years ago

Walla Walla Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1999

Classic and Bordeaux-like but with unmistakably new world sweet black fruit. Earth, mocha and cassis complete the package. Tannins fully resolved. Won’t hold forever but in a great place now — 6 years ago

The Deuce Syrah 2014

Mason Balistreri
9.3

A bright little expression of Syrah that stands in contrast to most heavy handed examples coming out of the region. Floral, herbal, a hint of olive but left lively from bright red fruits. I don't think you would ever guess this as an old world wine but it's a refreshing example of alternative style in Washington. — 6 years ago

Five Star Cellars

Walla Walla Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Ripe blueberries and brambly goodness. Deep and dark with cloves and spice. A powerful well balanced delicious richness and cocoa finish tidy this up into an unexpected treat. — 6 years ago

Bionic Frog Walla Walla Valley Syrah 2012

2012 Cayuse "Bionic Frog" Walla Walla Valley Syrah. In honor of my finally having made the grade to be blessed to receive a Frog allocation from Mr. Baron, I thought I’d celebrate by pulling the cork on this beast which was gifted to me by the most generous and revered wine Connoisseur, the man with the palate I so very much respect, the Rake of the Left Coast, the right honorable Mr. Bill Bender (@Bill Bender) First off, I find the Bionic Frog in general to be one of the most hedonistic, completely over the top and playful expressions of Syrah on the planet which of course, places it squarely in my wheelhouse. Still the most unique wine in the Cayuse lineup, and arguably one of the most sought after Syrah’s around. And now on to this vintage in particular, which none other than the esteemed Jeb Dunnuck(the one reviewer who I find to have a palate most closely aligned with my own) described with the enticing phrase “flirts with perfection.” Opaque, impenetrable ink blue in the stem. Wild, typical stoney Cayuse aromatics of black olives, bacon fat and dark fruits with notes of violets and lavender. A combination savory/sweet palate with olive tapenade, mushrooms and tar combined with sweet black plums and blueberry compote. Super rich, lush mouth feel. Dense concentration. Amazingly pleasing salinity on the lengthy finish. A full-throttle Porsche Cup Car lap of Road America, complete with The Kink, wine experience. (A track day we need to reprise soon Chuck). Sensory overload in the best way possible! The Frog knows! — 6 years ago
