La Pousse d'Or

Clos de la Bousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2014

Nose has mashed black cherry, dried plum, light stemmy notes, black licorice, charred barrel, cherry sauce reduction, warm tar, molasses, dark chocolate shavings, fresh cherry and light peppery herbs (watercress?).

Palate has bright black cherry, dried red cherry, unsweetened dried cranberry, moist earth, ripe plum, slight mint note, medium barrel notes, slightly drying with a medium-long finish, mild tannins.

The first of several 2014 La Pousse d'Or bottles we acquired late in 2019. This, as expected needs another 6-8+ years (2026+) to show its truer self.

Paired with slowly braised beef short ribs from a trusty farmer in Columbia Co. (Kinderhook Farm, Valatie, NY). Since good chefs know the sauce is the boss, we did an Asian-style sauce (soy, ginger, brown sugar, rice wine vinegar, garlic, red pepper flake, carrots & onions) which flavored the beef nicely and reduced even better! All served over brown rice, with toasted sesame seeds, so nice.

Cork pulled ~8h prior, to allow for a slow ox in a cool cellar space, this was the right move.

@Michael Herzog Heck yes, dinner was at least 9.4.

Bollinger

La Grande Année Brut Champagne Blend 2008

I love this wine. Birthdays are tough in Quarantine, but Alaskan King Crab Legs and great vintage bubbles helps keep the spirit up. Smooth, ethereal, and vibrantly alive—this cuvée spreads across the palate like a kitten and curls up playfully before easing its way down your throat. Doesn’t get much better. — 5 years ago

I think you are in NYC? Just stay safe & away from Covid-19. Cobbler much safer.

Wow. To quote @Steve Haro’s favorite soap opera - this is bold and beautiful. Weighty, palate-coating. Long finish. Full of black cherry, currant, and baking spice. A powerhouse with finesse. — 5 years ago
