For the first time ever, Spottswoode offers a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Spottswoode Estate Vineyard aging exclusively in Hungarian oak. Since the first vintage of Spottswoode in 1982, the pursuit to capture the highest expression of this historic vineyard yielded a philosophy of experimentation and continuous improvement. In the cellar, winemaker and vineyard manager Aron Weinkauf conducts cooper trials, which inform how he selects new barrels and refines Spottswoode's diverse barrel program. In 2017, Aron Weinkauf visited the Kadar cooperage as well as forests in Hungary to gain a greater understanding of Hungarian oak. With the exceptional 2018 vintage, Aron aged 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon from the Spottswoode Estate in custom barrels crafted during his visit. This wine is the result of his research.

Aging in oak tanks for one year, new French Limousin oak barrels for three years, and then one year in bottle
When the Lawrence family acquired Heitz Cellar in April 2018, they discovered a single dusty bottle in the wine library; a bottle of 1969 Lot C-91 Cabernet Sauvignon. After researching, we discovered wine collectors around the world had a few rare bottles in their cellar as well. Upon learning its origin and Joe Heitz’s inspiration for this singular bottling 50 years prior, we knew that it was time to rekindle the essence of this remarkable cuvée. In order to express the very best of Napa Valley, our winemaker began blending trials of our single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons in barrel, kept separate throughout their élevage. Sampling from barrels of our Oakville, Rutherford, Howell Mountain and St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon, Brittany Sherwood found the perfect marriage of these outstanding standalone wines. After blending, the wine continues to age in 100 percent new, French Limousin oak barrels for three years, followed by aging in bottle for an additional year. With the breadth of estate terroir that Heitz Cellar is fortunate to cultivate, we are able to create the quintessential Cabernet Sauvignon that embodies the elegance, ruggedness, refinement and balance that is uniquely Napa Valley. — 3 years ago

Winemaker Stacy Vogel achieves a supremely balanced 100 percent Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from two remarkable and distinct vineyards. The Vyborny Vineyard lends structured, dusty tannins and plenty of dark fruit from this rocky site on the southern border of Oakville. The lush, rich blue fruits in the blend come from Bonny’s Vineyard on the northern border of the Oakville nested appellation, nestled next to the Napa River. To bring these characteristics together, the wine is aged in 100 percent new French oak for 22 months.

Pellet Estate’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon “Trouvaille” is 100 percent estate fruit from the historic Pellet Vineyard and is a blend of Clone 4 and Clone 337 Cabernet Sauvignon, with a bit of Merlot. It is a wine with grip – vibrant and complex, yet shows elegance, balance, all while packed with flavors of dark fruit, hints of chocolate and spice, showing silky tannins with a seductive mouthfeel. This wine represents the absolute authentic expression of the Pellet Vineyard and is classically made by iconic vintner Tom Rinaldi. Quite frankly, as Tom and Eric think, “It’s a lucky find indeed.”

This Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Block 4 on our property which is our highest elevation block. The Cone See vines are planted in volcanic soil, the same profile found on Howell Mountain. Our vineyards have been farmed organically since 2005 and certified since 2008. This 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the best expressions of the estate - rich in tannins and color, aromas of boysenberry, raspberry jam and forest floor herbs promise the potential of getting better in the years to come.

This is the first time we are creating single barrel selection of the Staglin Clone Cabernet Sauvignon for Premiere Napa Valley. Harvested on Oct. 26, 2018 from our Rutherford Bench estate vines that were originally planted in the 1960s by the famed Andre Tchelistcheff and repropagated in 1990 under the talented hand of David Abreu. Winemaker Fredrik Johnasson selected these grapes for an in-barrel roto fermentation where the wine currently ages awaiting its future owner. One of the greatest vintages we have seen on our estate, this wine showcases the opulence, elegance, nuance and complexity our Cabernet Sauvignon has become known for.
