Volatile, disjointed, tannic and one-dimensional. However, there’s a grip and focus that suggests this wine just needs another 10-15 years. Who knows? And for such a reasonable price, I don’t regret checking in on a Rioja that has such a great track record.

Medium to full body. Firm but smooth tannins come from 28 months in small American oak barrels. Wonderfully balanced. Cesar, leather, mineral, dark fruit

Fruit for the selecion especial come from mugas highest altitude vineyards. They pick very late - second week in November. Tempranillo 70%. Garnacha, graciano, mazuelo.

A bit gamey, classical, great acidity and red and dark fruit. Good length, but brett

Red berries, vanilla, licorice and leather. Medium to full bodied with bright acidity and lingering tannins. Very good now with some air but should be outstanding in a few years when the tannins have smoothed out a little bit more.

It is Tuesday night, the night after my first Covid-19 shot. I thought it would be nice to open a 2009 Muga Selección Especial Rioja Reserva. This is a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo.

On the nose there a notes of black cherry, blackberry, black plum, black currant, licorice, savory notes, leather and earth.

On the palate I find notes of black cherry, black plum, tomato, black currant, spice, licorice, black pepper, a nice mineral note and earth.

This wine is full bodied with a fleshy velvety mouthfeel, medium+ acidity and medium + fine mouth coating tannins which moves into a long dark fruit savory earthy finish. Definitely a lovely Rioja and in a very good drinking spot right now but still has many years to go. I hope everyone is doing well please still stay safe and healthy. Have a great week going forward. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

OMG this was so amazing. Smoke, dark berry, spice. Best deal on the planet, I'd say.
