Cantina dei Produttori Carema
Carema Nebbiolo
My last bottle from ‘16. Almost at peak perfection but what do I know- other than one of my favorite Nebbiolos. Always a bit shy but the bottle age & air brings all those rose, hibiscus & cranberry notes to a fuller pitch. Such great aromatics too.

Jan 20th, 2024My ‘ house’ wine shared w friends & paired with baked Cod & Roquefort sauce, roasted vegetables, & barley. Pretty in color & on the palate: rusted rose hips, some distant forest floor. Medium plus acidity but enough to cut through the Roquefort sauce, & low enough tannins to not spar with the cod.

Dec 19th, 2021Bought about a case, so dipping in frequently. My ‘house red’. Almost a Rose color. Lower the temp to savor its power.

Dec 19th, 2020The 2016 of this wine is gorgeous. Just starting to show all the classic secondary notes, with tons of length, verve and redrinkability.

Dec 19th, 2019Repeat after me: Carema, great, poor man’s Barolo; 2016: superb vintage in Italy. While this bottling is from my dwindling case buy, it just shows better & better, especially after a robust decant. Color: Faded rose w/ orange tints. More roses, tar, & chewy tannins on palate. Light/ medium body, medium acid. Just something about the soul that glimmers, like sitting before a fireplace in a darkened room.

Sep 16th, 2020Light blood red color. Nose is beautiful with lilac, slight hint of dried earth and red fruit (pomegranate). There’s still tannin, but delicate, almost as if the acidity and tannin are dancing around each other. The purple lilac and pomegranate follow into the palate. This can maybe use another year, but very drinkable now, especially with pork chops.
