Nebbiolo

Bric dël Fiasc Barolo Nebbiolo 2000

2000 vintage. Sweet fill. Exquisite cork extracted via the Durand but likely could have used a standard wine key. Darker color than expected. Decanted with expected sed. Medium/medium heavy body. Tannic, dark-fruited nose. Frontal chunkiness. Mid-palate resolution. Finishing solution, smoothing out after 5-6 seconds and gliding into conversation. Still a ton of youthful fruit and passion. Phenomenal (and, unfortunately, last) specimen. Need to acquire if still possible. Absolutely no rush to crush. 7.31.26. — 2 days ago

Langhe Nebbiolo 2022

Ruby with notes of red fruits and floral scents. On the palate elegant red fruits with notes of blueberry and earthy dried lavender. Good balance, soft fine tannins, medium finish ending with fruit and earthy character. Nice value. Consistent quality. — 17 days ago

Bricco delle Viole Barolo Nebbiolo 2015

Showing more new world in this warmer vintage. Aromas of ripe red fruits - mainly strawberries. The palate showing those ripe fruits typical of the vintage. Needs more cellar time to show its best. Expected more complexity and quality from this producer and the vineyard. Have the next bottle in 2029/2030. — a month ago

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2012

From magnum. Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of several hours. The 2012 pours a garnet color with a translucent core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with punchy notes of Morello cherry, raspberry, pomegranate, orange rind, red flowers, and a mix of cool and warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ and the texture is almost chewy. The 2012 is still an awesome value; really tasty stuff. Drink now through 2042. — 2 months ago

Castiglione Barolo Nebbiolo 2021

Presented to me double-blind at Tasting Group. The wine pours a garnet color with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity with very faint staining of the tears and no signs of sediment or gas. On the nose, the wine is developing with powerful notes of ripe and some tart and dried red fruits: Morello cherry, dried orange peel, roses, tar, dried green herbs, talcum powder, dry gravelly earth. On the palate, the wine is bone dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ and so is the alcohol. Powerful and delicious.

Initial conclusions: this could be Nebbiolo, Sangiovese or possibly a Grenache blend from Italy or France. But if I’m trusting me notes here, this has gotta be Nebbiolo so that’s what I’m calling. Final conclusion: this is Nebbiolo from Italy, Piemonte, Barolo, and for the hell of it, I’m going to call Serralunga d’Alba…from a producer like Massolino, 2021. Ha! Vietti!! And I don’t hate my call because Castiglione Falletto is right next door. Tasty stuff, of course. Drink now with patience and through 2051.

@Tom Casagrande I’m passionate about the wines of Piemonte and they make up a significant portion of my cellar. Even though it’s an area of focus for me, I feel like the more I learn, the less I know. I hope to spend some significant time there at some point…

Prunotto

Barolo Nebbiolo 2013

#AgedWineTuesday

Ruby in color with medium intensity and a wide reddish rim.

Earthy nose and medium bodied with medium plus acidity.

Very dry on the palate and complex.

Showing red cherries, raspberries, tobacco leaf, earth, light oak, mildew, light green vegetables, herbs, forest floor, black pepper and black tea.

Tangy finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries.

This 13 year old Barolo is still drinking nicely, but will not get much better from this point on. Soft and elegant, but lost a lot of the fruits by now.

Not fully balanced at this point, but easy drinking and better with food.

13.5% alcohol by volume.

90 points.

$60 (current vintage).

2021 vintage. Outstanding Nebbiolo. Leather, smoke, and a hint of fruit on the nose; continued to open up nicely over the course of the first hour. Cherry and complex tannins on the palette with a fine finish. Paired exceptionally well with filet mignon. — 10 days ago
