St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend

A very special treat as the first wine of a Cheval Blanc vertical cultivated by @Martin G Rivard @David L @Shawn R for their visit to SD this week and an incredibly generous hosting gift from them to me. This was astonishingly intact and not falling off much at all. The finish was initially astringent with a slight bleachy quality that blew off quickly. Still an ample amount of red fruit with a clear taste profile of blood, iron and mushroom. Fun as F*%*

Fading quick, what was there was non-descript. Bummer! I heard the other bottle was sublime.

Molasses nose. Dark fruit, lots of mushroom and cigar box. Medium lengthy

Tasted blind. Totally different in style from the more elegant 1970 Château Petrus, the 1964 Château Cheval Blanc bursts with brettanomyces notes, but aristocratic and interesting rather than off-putting. Once your sense of smell gets past the brett, pronounced aromas of earth, dried plums and figs, cinnamon, licorice and mint emerge. Full-bodied, densely structured, concentrated and powerful, this is a hedonistic, sexy beast of a wine, waiting to be unleashed. Drink now.

1964 vintage. Surprisingly vibrant with a great velveteen mouthfeel and predominantly cherry notes. Still years of good drinking ahead.
