Served blind alongside what was eventually revealed to be the 1971 Mouton Rothschild. This almost had me leaning Napa by a classic producer due to the gorgeous fruit and generous, scratch that, lavish use of new French oak. After careful deliberation with those at the table with more experience drinking Mouton both young and old, I was able to come alongside the others that this was indeed young Pauillac. All the cassis, cigar box, tobacco and baking spices ones heart could desire with some of the loveliest acid. Speaking of, the structure still has quite a grasp of this one but with all the lovely fruit, everything is in brilliant balance, even at 18 years young. Given that, I expect this wine to drink well for decades to come, particularly since secondary characteristics have hardly entered the chat. Definitely a wine I hope to enjoy many more times over the years but so grateful I got to try now.

Smoky nose exhibiting a graphite streak; stewed, baked, and braised meats with cranberry, plum, black currant and black olive, cedar plank and tobacco eyelid that flutters between oak and violet. Graphite and iron lead the Connecticut shade entry, clove and pepper pop into view, dried rose petal and violet, tulip; firm tannins, super structured and complex!

One of the real highlights on the Left Bank, the 2005 Mouton Rothschild is a dark, potent Pauillac. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, spice and leather all take shape in the glass. The 2005 is a dense, powerful and explosive wine endowed with tremendous energy and pure power. The fruit is just starting to emerge, but Mouton remains a very tight, super-classic wine. With time in the glass, some of the natural richness and radiance of the year starts to emerge. Even so, the 2005 is still very young and closed. A few more years in bottle will only be beneficial. Impressive. Tasted two times. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, April 2021)

I’ll chalk this up to bottle variation.

The 2005 Mouton is one heck of a wine. I've been lucky enough to try it a few times and this time was, as always, a treat. The intensity and darkness of it is what I like most. It is ripe, but not too ripe. Rather, just ripe enough to give considerable richness and intensity, yet with perfect poise. I can't wait for the next time.

2000 Mouton was the wine of the night for many including me, 2005 was no slouch and showed very good promise. Dense, layered with full on currants, black cherry, lead pencil and graphite.

2005 - very complex, red and black fruits, harmonious, milk chocolate, coffee, integrated tannic profile. Great stuff. #moutonrothschild #pauillac #firstgrowthbordeaux #bordeaux #wine
