Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona
Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese
A 2014 Brunello that is able to overcome the difficulties of the vintage and still shine. Deep ruby red in the glass. The nose displays uber Brunello characteristics of fresh herbs and spice. Ripe red berries all over this and they really elevate things. Tobacco is ever present along with a touch of earth. Soft acidity with firm tannins.
The 2014 vintage in Brunello was a bit of a dud with a lot of well known producers not being up to par with their offerings but Ciacci Piccolomini definitely represented well. Full bodied and more than a bit savory in nature this is obviously working hard to overcome the inherent deficiencies in the vintage. And it does a good job. The palate follows the nose with ripe red cherries being dominant. Smoke, herbs, and tobacco. Warm spice lingers on the long finish. Incredibly delicious and worth seeking out for sure.

Bright and vibrant. Cherries, plums, and red berries. Delicious now, but I am sure it will improve with some aging.

Dec 12th, 20202014. Call it 9.1-9.2. So solid for an off-vintage but Ciacci rocks. Has a slightly sour funk with the cherry fruit which combines with surprising concentration to make it fairly unique - works for me. Good tertiary Sangiovese flavors as well. Drinks well now but wouldn’t risk hold too much longer given this subpar vintage. $40 At Wine Library, elsewhere.

Aug 4th, 2019Very balanced. Smoky , licorice . Medium plus for tannins. Same with acidity. It was ready to drink . Maybe a few more years would really make it even better.
