Domaine Jean-Louis Chave
L'Hermitage Syrah
Hermitage, Northern Rhône, Rhône, France

Pains me to say this bottle was on its way out. Very dry cork and low fill. Not sure about storage. Completely tertiary with dried florals and meaty bacon and salami tones. Silky palate, but just missing a step. Came back to the glass thinking “maybe now, maybe this time,” and it wasn’t to be. Birth year.

Refined but also absolutely savage. Weightless. Black pepper, shrooms and a panoply of herbs and spices (mint, ras al harout, etc). Fruit didn’t come through until after almost an hour in the glass. Black currant and red plum still there. This wine takes me somewhere. Unquestionably one of the best wines I’ve had all year.
