E. Guigal
Château d'Ampuis Côte-Rôtie Syrah
Soft spoken and elusive. Bacon, ash, black fruit, earth, black tea. Not as much olive/violet/meat as I would have expected. Not the most generous (vintage?) but expressive given the age.

Mar 20th, 2016I was expecting (let's say: fearing) heavy fireworks -the wine aged 38 months in new oak barrels- but this turned out quite elegant and balanced. Three bottles were bought by accident (at a wine auction when bidding at a wrong lot). Typical bacon notes, subtle texture, nice acidity. Reading tasting notes from different vintages I believe 2004 is in a lighter style than other years. Sometimes you are up for a surprise after a mistake!

Nov 12th, 2015This was my WOTN. I can't thank Winn enough for recommending it!

Jan 23rd, 2015Côte Rôtie and family meal. A little oaky and "smooth" for my taste, but a hint of olive and BBQ ribs peaking through.

Aug 4th, 2013What a bottle to share with the one and only Fred Dame. Medium bodied, mushrooms, lightly smoked meat, dried figs, light touch of white pepper. Special wine, very special night

Mar 23rd, 2019Decanted for 3 hours and it was well worth the wait. Incredible notes of pure fruit, bacon fat, jasmine and truffle. The palate had great length, good structure and integrated tannins. All and all, a very impressive d'Ampuis.
