It's time for #MerlotThursday!

Dark ruby in color with a purplish rim.

Fruity nose with blackberries, black currants, plums, bell pepper, oak, barnyard, cloves, vegetables, spices, tobacco leaf and peppercorn.

Full bodied with medium acidity and nice legs.

Dry on the palate with blackberries, raspberries, black currants, vanilla, wood, spices, peppercorn, pencil lead, light vegetables, coffee, chocolates and tobacco.

Medium on the finish with soft tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a simple Merlot from California. Not fully balanced, but drinkable nonetheless.

Needs an hour to open up properly and remove some of the acidity. A little better than their Cabernet. Drink while still young.

13.5% alcohol by volume.

84 points.

$10.

This high-volume value #merlot pulls above its weight. Good dose of soft tannin fruit set in a healthy background of oak, but not egregious. It might not have been the best wine to mix into Sangria (I poured a side glass before mixing the fruit in) but hey, haven’t we all been in a rush while entertaining guests to quickly find a value bottle in your fridge or cellar?
