Popped and poured in a cocktail hour setting; no formal notes. That being said, the 2007 Bosconia is quite striking and grabbed my attention even in the midst of social responsibilities. This baby is slightly funky and loaded with Luxardo cherry fruit, olives, dill and damp earth. It starts a touch lean but seems to gain weight the longer that it’s open. So much personality. I don’t get to see Bosconia very often in our market…which is a shame because it’s a lovely, and decidedly different, expression of Rioja from LdH. Drinking well now and should continue to do so past 2027.

Tasted alongside the Tondonia, the 2007 Viña Bosconia has a near identical profile, and as such it’s very hard to differentiate between the two. After several hours’ air - this took far longer to open up than the Tondonia - it shows generous aromas of dried cherry, blackberry and a green herbal edge that wasn’t a feature of its sibling.

Hard to pick a winner now between the two, but I feel in ten years the Bosconia will have the edge.

A blend of 80% Tempranillo with 20% Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo, deep Ruby with aromas of red fruits, spice and earthy notes. On the palate flavors of ripe strawberry and black cherry with currants, tobacco and cedar notes. Fine tannins, long finish, savory ending with tobacco and earthy character.

Took an hour to have the American oak blow off and for the tannins to integrate. Too rough for the bolognese it was paired with, but hours 2-3 with it decanted were excellent elegant fruit with depth and structure. Long life ahead, per usual.

As expected, even at 12yrs, this is very youthful. It’s rich without being heavy or dense. Cherry tobacco leaves accompanied by herbs de Provence and coconut/dill shavings on the nose. Crazy tart on the palate with high acidity. Mostly black cherry tart and fleshy cherry skin with a more herbal seasoning type finish. Give this time to evolve and add layers.

Limpid ruby-red. A complex, intensely perfumed bouquet evokes raspberry, cherry, vanilla, cured tobacco and exotic spices, and a potpourri note builds in the glass. Sweet, penetrating red fruit preserve, cherry cola and lavender pastille flavors are complicated by mineral and candied licorice flourishes. The impressively long, subtly tannic finish shows real energy and tight focus, and leaves floral and red berry notes behind. Aged for five years in American oak barrels. The 2007 ‘Vina Bosconia’ has a high percentage of Garnacho blended in (15%) with small portions Graciano and Mazuelo. The wine is another sensational effort from this storied estate, especially considering the challenges of the 2007 vintage. The nose opens with beautiful red fruits with blood orange and sage that are nicely woven into the nose. The palate unveils wonderful freshness and richness considering the challenges of the vintage. Pipe tobacco, leather, crushed mint and blood orange zest all connect with the sour red fruits. Beautiful now this has a long life ahead of it. Drink 2019-2035- 93

Savory, pepper, animal, clay earth, soy sauce, red and black fruit with toast. Classically balanced and delicious.

This wine is drinking great — mellow tannins but still some pretty complex and delicious fruit for a 16 year old wine. 80% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha.
