2010 Saxum, Terry Hoage. Nailed it, but needs time. No shortage of ripeness here, but needs some evolution for balance. Can't wait for a few years to zip by on this bad boy.

Another winner by Justin Smith at Saxum, the 2010 Terry Hoage is a nearly equal mix of syrah, grenache, and mourvedre (with a slight dominance of syrah - 46/33/21). The tannins are sweet and completely resolved, so the palate beautifully follows up the sweet blackberries on the nose with a seamless mouthfeel, lots of glycerin, and a balanced, lingering finish. Cannot imagine this wine drinking any better than it is right now.

Back to a big domestic red for the Caps :) Hint of smoked meat, oak, pepper, an almost skunkiness?, root veggies, quite hot on the nose, with big rough tannins. This comes off much younger than its 6 years, curious what this does in 20 years. Interesting wine I think, but it's one of those that I much prefer the nose to the palate.
