Reaching into the wayback machine of my palate preferences to see if I can motivate the Caps to not suck in the playoffs with some Big F*©king Red Wine. And yeah, this wine just isn't my bag anymore, baby. But I'll take one for the team and choke it down 🤣😂

Ok, I'm being dramatic, it's not terrible, just not what I'm used to drinking anymore.

Strong blackberry, graphite, anise, oak, touch of saline, mint, not too tannic on the palate actually. Fairly smooth.

Back to a big domestic red for the Caps :) Hint of smoked meat, oak, pepper, an almost skunkiness?, root veggies, quite hot on the nose, with big rough tannins. This comes off much younger than its 6 years, curious what this does in 20 years. Interesting wine I think, but it's one of those that I much prefer the nose to the palate.

Decanted, will follow over the evening.

On open: big wine, tart but ripe, red cherry, intersting mix of orange peel, five spice, and wet fall leaves. Big tannins, astringent, some alcohol on the nose actually...will check in later

Didnt get back to this until 24 hours later...this really opened up the next day unsurprisingly. Alcohol aroma totally vanished, tannins smoothed out completely, excellent. Give it some more time, or a very long decant.

The big red for tonight, and it's without a doubt big! Candied blackberry, coffee, vanilla, still very young, but I want more meat/bacon/fat and olives in my syrah...will post more of a note and rate after a decant...

Decant helped, but still pretty hot to me...no real new flavors jump out at, not my favorite

Showing more sappiness with the decant, and a slight sweet tart?, a raw oyster briney-ness that wasn't there before, really like it, but I miss earthy funk and leaves here...

Continuing to check in on 08s...just threw in decanter after small taste, pretty, good first impression with cherries, lots of spice, roses, floral perfume, but definitely will open up...full note to come in a bit

After hour+ decant...definite and distinct iron/blood has emerged in the palate, a little soy sauce, tiny hint of fallen leaves, very, very fine, smooth tannins, but there's still such grip to them on the finish. Really good, but no surprise here that it'll probably be better in a decade+ with more development.

The longer it's in the decanter, the more earthy notes are emerging

24 hours later: still going strong... Had a half bottle left in the decanter that I put back in the bottle and corked. Has smoothed out even more, picked up some coffee notes, and a more pronounced floral sweetness on the nose

After the failure of big domestic red last game, we're back to my favorite; good Burgundy :)

And this is good...I still think 07 is fairly overlooked, I've enjoyed most I've had, and prices are still rational. Somewhat.

Right up my alley here. Great nose of earth, meat, vanilla, saffron, cherry, umami soy, spices, and an interesting hint of pachouli I dont think I've ever found in a wine before...just good stuff. Pretty palate too, lingering savory finish. Smooth, medium tannins that grip, a ways to go before they fully integrate.

On pop n pour this is already really good funky Burgundy. Tight on the palate, and a youthful freshness, but has that obvious characteristic barnyard I look for. Love it already, but hoping the palate smooths a bit with a decant...will follow up

Lemons, flowers, freshly laundered linen, not a lot of minerals, more citrus and cream. Very cutting acidity still, the barest hint of the butterscotch I associate with age...definitely not premox'd. Very good, probably will live at least a couple decades at this pace...reds for the Caps game to come :)

Since big red was working, I felt comfortable enough to open good Burgundy! Decanted, this note is from right after decanting. Fresh, bright red cherries, rosewater, moldering leaves, really pretty. Great example of younger Burgundy.
