Abrupt Vineyards

Couly-Dutheil

Clos de l'Olive Chinon Cabernet Franc 1997

A dual pleasure: aromatics & softness of aged cabernet franc with the freshness of youth. Highly aromatic; green bell pepper, olive, graphite, hay bales. Acidic & fresh. Beautiful fruit. Short—but not abrupt—finish. Thanks @Lyle Fass — 2 years ago

Cirq

Treehouse Vineyard Pinot Noir 2014

This just works. Always. On the nose this is just so balanced and enticing. Lovely deep color and strong cherry notes. The finish is complex and long. It’s definitely a youngish abrupt Pinot. It’s powerful but it’s sooo good. — 4 years ago

Kopke

Colheita Porto Port Blend 1967

Ocean, leather, loose leaf chewing tobacco, green smoothie (generically) smell, dark brown and some red, the taste is delicate and raising before then getting caramelly, succulent, some tarragon, slight medium dark coffee but like java, the taste swirls and that makes it complex, and it ends with an abrupt and straight forward wood, it’s like slight shotty and best port I’ve had (but I don’t drink a ton of port) — 5 years ago

Domaine Chofflet-Valdenaire

Givry Pinot Noir 2019

A very un-Burgundian Pinot. Interesting and challenging and ultimately harmonious. Spicy, dark, brooding. Unapologetically assertive. Abrupt at first, but gives quite a bit with ten minutes of oxygen. Begins to harmonize more and more.

Compartments of sweet black cherries, baseball mitt, cedar, and limestone form to a point of a fortified dark syrupy cherry juice. At 14.5% it isn't as bright, candied, or cola-ed as you'd expect.

It's dark, spicy, and wholesome.

Domaine Robert Chevillon

Nuits-Saint-Georges Pinot Noir 2001

The nose on this is spectacular... expansive, with dark complex red fruit, a rich earthy base and gorgeous floral details. The palate is dull in comparison, but still tasty, with solid plum fruit and a slightly abrupt finish. — 4 years ago

Massaya

Beqaa Valley Rosé Blend 2017

Really distinctively good rose. Surprised by average Delectable rating. Soft tannic grip, smooth acidity, and clear, concise fruit with length. Opened this after another rose that seemed more abrupt, less cohesive than this. — 5 years ago

Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier

Musigny Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2008

The nose on this is staggering. Deep blue fruit, pepper, spice, violets. Very lush and spring. Glycerin and smooth mouthfeel. Absolutely delicious. The end is a bit abrupt and dense but i suspect with time this will explode. Just delicious — 4 years ago

Magnum 1998 Chapoutier L’Ermite Ermitage. Opened and drank immediately. Beautiful nose and front end, but the finish of the wine has started to diminish. Not an abrupt finish, but not any real length to it. Very light. Good lunch wine, we decided. — 4 years ago

Domaine Ramonet

Boudriotte Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Chardonnay 2017

Within the last decade, Ramonet’s 14’s and 17’s are likely most regarded. Expressive and pure and not at all fat like his 15’s can be. Here, showing signature Ramonet peppermint, citrus blossoms, white flowers, Bosc pear and a touch of wildflower honey and spices. The finish is a bit abrupt for 1er Cru Ramonet. It’s a bit backward today as the initial pour was the best and loses intensity over time. Although ‘17’ white Burgundy typically showing really well today, even more so than ‘16, I’d hold this one. — 4 years ago
