Last night, this top-three-wine-of-my-life, from the one of the greatest hands ever to prune a vine, the mythical Burgundian Henri #Jayer 🇫🇷 , who was an inspiration to so many great winemakers (including those of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti). Jayer was the template, the prototype, doing pure, unfiltered, minimal-intervention wine long before it was even a thing. Drinking this 1959 Jayer #Richebourg was like getting to listen to the original master tape of Zeppelin IV 🎸, experiencing it exactly as the artist intended, with elevated highs, more resonant bass, and sharply delineated nuances 🎶. Even after 58 years, it was fresh and generous, a veritable Roman candle 🌋 of plums, cherries, spice, and smoke. It had this minty-woodsy character than reminded an artist at the table of “Arches watercolor paper” and “India ink”. To me, it was like the best forest you have ever smelled -- Muir Woods 🌳 in a glass. Its velvety finish rolled on forever, and only after about 40 minutes did its overall taste finally start to fade. 2019: Blackest stout with a grainy, dark chestnut head that quickly reduces to
Polished black marble with a lunar nebula central. Single arches lacing. Molasses and licorice nose, dark chocolate, rich Turkish coffee, tobacco, caramel, coconut oak smolders through the last sniff. Really well integrated first sip. Powerful and sensually abundant, black licorice extract, chicory coffee, vanilla extract, pecans, dark brown sugar, toffee, mocha for the mileage.

Walnut skins, curling yellow parchment paper, roasted yellow apples, poached pear, and honeysuckle. Larmandier-Bernier's Vieille Vigne de Cramant Grand Cru 2006 always feels autumnal to me and masterfully constructed. Subtle oxidation, ultra-fine mousse and quarried vinosity on the finish makes this a somewhat austere Champagne. One feels compelled to study it, the graceful lines and branching sexpartite ribs, transverse arches, and dappled, dusty sunlight filtered through clerestory windows, its weightless, timeless charm. 12.5% ABV — 10 years ago

First Charta Riesling I have tried (and still the only one I have ever come across). Complex aromatics of white flowers, crushed stone, and red apple. Barely off dry with adequate acidity - this is designed as the perfect food wine. Very good at $19 (on sale).

11.5% abv - 9.8 g/l RS - 6.9 g/l acidity

A lavender bouquet of earthen musk sensually suggests a glance then glare and an invitation to dance. Slowly rhythmically she arches, I pull her closer, turn her round, once, twice, still closer deeply inhaling she goes cherry laced with spice, so again I spin her methodically watching her swirl showing burgundy and lingering ox blood she clings and seductively lingers, so I breath her in eyes-open admiring her darker edges but lighter rim, another spin and her wetness touches touches my lips she takes the lead exploring my tongue and mouth her soft silkiness lingering, she slides slowly touching all, and then she leans towards the edge and free-falls, gone but for the memory of her turns, her's twists, her embrace, her trace - so I pour. — 10 years ago

The '95 never fails to astound me. This bottle came with me from Maine, through Colorado and Utah in extreme summer heat. It's been to climbing areas like Rifle, Mount Evans, Lincoln Lake, and also Yellowstone, Arches.

As usual, when I decanted it in the morning it tasted thin, figgy, bretty- oxidized and unpleasant. 8 hours later it became a tapestry of tertiary blackcurrant, tamari, blackberry, toast, sandalwood, roasted purple yam skin, a slight balsamic prickle, and dried orange.

It dominated the conversation, constantly transforming in the glass. We talked of first meetings, of Serge (the winemaker), the mysteries of how this wine was made, how it was rejected on release due to high VA. The 95 continues to grow in wisdom and eloquence, and probably will for several more decades. — 10 years ago
