Niepoort and Raúl Pérez: good wine — 4 years ago
Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of 90 minutes. The 2022 pours, a bright magenta color with a transparent core; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of fresh strawberry, watermelon, kiwi, gravelly earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with low tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium. This is a deliciously quaffable Rosado and yet has enough complexity and “je ne sais quoi” to grab one’s attention. Drink now and over the next handful of years. Uncle Raúl is a master. — 4 months ago

Dry, elegant Godello from three sites around Valtuille de Abajo in Bierzo, Raúl Pérez’ hometown. Fermented in used barrels. Austere nose with notes of grapefruit and lime. Mineral, lightly saline, reminiscent of classic Chablis. Nice, slightly bitter finish. — 4 years ago
A new fave in the Spanish white wine category! Had a wonderful richness to the flavor but light and zippy acidity. Would definitely purchase again. — 5 months ago

A very serious 100% Mencía, Valdeobispo is sourced from a 1.6 hectare plot planted in 1910 in the eponymous lieu-dit in Villafranca del Bierzo. This was the first vintage of this single-vineyard bottled under Cantariña’s label. Prior to this, grapes were sold to their neighbor Raúl Pérez, who actually advised them to vinify this plot on its own. Fermented in oak foudre and aged in used barriques for 12 months. Unusually dark ruby color, quite concentrated, slightly rustic. Aromas of red fruit, hibiscus, floral and earthy notes. Round and powerful, smooth tannins — 4 years ago

“Sketch” brought the power tonight with bright, tropical fruits: passion fruit, star fruit, lemons and metal. Our palates were lavished with acid and the salinity was the star of the show. An ever so long and refreshing finish. An elixir that gave one the feeling we were being rehydrated with each sip. An emotional wine. Probably has a couple of decades. — 2 months ago
