Bombshell Wines

Chavost

Rosé de Saignée Brut Nature Pinot Meunier - Pinot Noir Blend

Let’s talk about this bubbly berry bombshell!

It’s the Champagne Chavost Rosé de Saignée Brut Nature made with a blend of Pinot Noir (67%) & Meunier (33%) from the Vallée de la Marne.

That beautiful color comes naturally from contact between the juice and pigmented grape skins, adding an extra dose of intensity – both in color and flavors.

We’ve been closely following Chavost wines but this is our first time sipping one ourselves. And it is delivering!!

Champagne Chavost is a cooperative winery located in the village of Chavot-Courcourt. Currently led by Fabian Daviaux as cellarmaster, it was founded in 1946 by Fabian’s grandfather and eleven other families. Fabian pursues a minimalist approach to winemaking – nothing added, nothing removed – giving a clear voice to the fruit and terroir of the Vallée de la Marne.

This wine is Brut Nature, so it didn’t receive any sugar / sweetness at the end of the winemaking process.

Despite its robust fruitiness, expressing notes of cherry clafoutis, strawberry shortcake, pie crust, redcurrants, pomegranate, fresh raspberries and cream, it is also lean, elegant, & incredibly lively in its profile with a vibrant acidity & textural mouthfeel.

It’s wonderfully fragrant, energetic, and certifiably delicious. An excellent way to celebrate Champagne Day (yesterday).

Partida Creus

CX Penedès Cartoixa Vermell

Sat afternoon at home. Aromatic, tropical fruit nose. Very fresh on the palate, with satisfying tartness that accentuates how fresh it is. Slight salinity that gives it additional complexity.

The CX of Partida Creus is a real bombshell of freshness, a nose that plays on notes of white fruits, citrus, and aromatic herbs. Tart and funky on the palate, with a long finish. A super rare and super good wine.

Partida Creus is the project of two Italians now in residence in the Tarragona region of Catalonia, just south of Barcelona. The idea of the project was to work with historical, often overlooked local varietals that in many cases were not recognised by the D.O. of the area: Penedès. Massimo and Antonella strategically went about buying up small plots of abandoned vineyards dotted around the area where mostly unknown varietals such as Garrut, Vinyater, Samsó and Queixal de Llop grew. They sought to revitalise the vines and work out the best expression for these old varetals, working without chemicals in the vineyard and without selected yeasts or any other additions in the cellar. They make an impressively dizzying number of different wines, all of which are unified by a very distinctive house style - raw, visceral and pungent reds, and salty, turbid, expressive whites. As a couple they have an insatiable energy that really comes through in the wine.

Origin: Bonastre, Tarragona, Spain
Vintage: 2020
Grape variety: Cartoixa Vermell (Red Xarel-lo)
Food pairing: Risotto with porcini mushrooms, sushi, tuna, paella

Marchesi Antinori

Castello della Sala Cervaro della Sala Umbria Chardonnay Grechetto 2007

“Brought” this to the Crew Classé virtual tasting with Antinori’s Renzo Cotarella. So enjoyable to drink this with the wine maker and see inside his thoughts.. in 2020 this is a vibrant gold bombshell from the heavier oaked era. The fullness , density and kind persistence allow it to pare with a wide range of snacks and meals but especially good with brunch grazing — 6 years ago

Titus

Napa Valley Malbec 2012

Wow.. bombshell Malbec by mister Phillip Titus himself. What a wine. Rose petal, smoke, cedar, blackberry jam, and pepper in a fragrance jettisoning out of the glass. The pallet is big and lush - deep extraction of the fruit, exhibiting notes of black plum, smoked blackberry compote, mocha, dark chocolate, black pepper - all laced by firm, but forgiving tannins. I do love Cabernet from P.T. (especially Chappellet) but when it comes to the non-traditional wines he creates like his Petit Verdot and Malbec, he brings something entirely different to the table. I should get as much of this 2012 as I can. Brings me back to having BBQ creek side, listening to Phillip tell me stories about Robert Mondavi while he had an IPA in hand. Bravo Mr. Titus. — 9 years ago

Eva Fricke

Lorch Riesling 2019

Wow, this is an absolute bombshell of a wine, the Lorcher Riesling from Rheingau superstar Eva Fricke in the 2019 vintage. Right from the get-go, this supercharged wine blows you off your feet with its cacophony of petrol, salt, lime and garden herbs on the nose – almost like shoving your proboscis into a packet of salt and vinegar crisps. In a good way!

The palate is actually quite a contrast, with a supple, generous mouthfeel with none of the hard edges this grape can bring. Perhaps attributable to the warm, ripe vintage that 2019 was. But it offers a complex array of bitter fruits, some sweet lime, nectarine, and a long finish. It is perhaps slightly underwhelming given the supercharged aromas this wine possesses, but it’s very good stuff nevertheless!

Having this a second timr...years late it's the same bombshell! Luscious oaky red fruits and cassis with a hint of dark chocolate. Tannins are heavy so let it decant for an hour min. Lots of oak. Solid value from Galliac in SW France. — 5 years ago

Meinklang

Weisser Mulatschak Pinot Gris Blend 2018

One of the first orange wines I have bought and still remains one of my favorites. Meinklang has set such a bar when it comes to making wines that are unpretentious and yet full of subtle complexity. Biodynamic stone fruit and citrus bombshell that begs for dinner parties and picnics and afrobeat. — 6 years ago

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe

La Crau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2015

Brief Notes:- A medium weight red fruited savoury, earthy, bombshell of M+ intensity…a tarry note with liquorice adding to its Chateauneuf personality. An excellent example. More Burgundian than Rhone in weight and texture. Not sure further cellaring will add much but delicious right now. NB I have a bottle or two left and maybe a magnum? Must check. Had another bottle 17 weeks later on 18th May 2024 with similar notes. Pale tawny, dirty Ruby in colour - almost transparent. First aromas of tar, roses and violets. Medium bodied / red fruits, strawberries and raspberries in a savoury style. — 2 years ago

@Bob McDonald, historically VT ages easily for 20-30 years, in fact, I’ve often been underwhelmed by some vintages when they’re less than 10 years old, and the same wine at age 20+ has aged into something quite magnificent!! Of course, YMMV. Cheers!!

Domaine Dupeuble

Pere et Fils Beaujolais Kermit Lynch 2020

Fresh and inviting on the nose, with fruitiness and allure. Some dustiness over it all lends to the mystery.
So drinkable and fruity.
Delicious.

Giuseppe Quintarelli

Rosso Cà del Merlo Veneto Corvina Blend 2011

2011. 9.5+. A bombshell; best wine I’ve had all year. Completely seamless and mouth-filling. Outstanding balance between gobs of funky dark Amarone-like fruit and firm tannins, without being plummy. So many complex flavors that evolve over an eve and a very long aftertaste. So good at this stage but has many more years left. $85 at Pluckemin. — 6 years ago
