Meaty, especially when first opened. On the nose it showed notes of tomato paste, smoked meat, and mushrooms. It was likewise quite earthy on the palate, with black fruit, red fruits singed by the sun, stones, and black pepper on the finish. It was full-bodied, and had medium + to high acid and tannins.
I would highly recommend decanting this wine as it started out quite tight when we first poured it. We also had a glass the next night, and it was MUCH better. It was richer, smoother, more polished, and less gamey, showing notes of licorice, violets, pomegranates, and even a little blood orange joining the party that had not been there the first night.
Had as a part of a pizza night.

So wonderful!! LOVE IT!! Had New Years Eve 2020. — 4 years ago
Great p/q. 2016 clearly a standout year in Chianti. This is brilliant ruby, with a pure sangiovese nose - leather, red and black fruit, spice, and forest floor. Med bodied, clean strawberry and red cherry with silky mouthfeel. Then a solid lick of superfine tannin bring grip and length. — 5 years ago
Salmon! (In colour, not in taste).
Stoned! (The wine, not me).
Red berries.
I don’t know why I aged this as long as I did, but it was worth it. — 4 years ago

e, reigned in by its Tuscan provenance—and that is a good thing, a food-friendly thing. The 2013 Brancaia Illatraia quietly unspools with notes of plums and ripe blackberries steeped in thyme. Burning embers, dust, and juniper berries add layered complexity. On the palate, it’s round and plush, with mouth-coating tannins and bright acidity that ebb and flow in a core of juicy dark fruit. A decent entry-level “Super Tuscan.” I’m curious about its cellaring potential given the WS review below.
WS: 90. Flavors of cherry, strawberry, sanguine, iron and Mediterranean scrub are supported by a solid structure in this red, which is balanced overall, with dusty tannins and a resonant finish. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2026 through 2040. 27,500 cases made, 10,200 cases imported.
