Britannia Creek Sawmill

Tardieu-Laurent

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2021

Clear, deep ruby colour. Clean, pronounced red fruits and pepper on the nose. Dry, high acidity and tannins, with ripe plum, red cherries and heaps of pepper! Full-bodied with a very long finish. Very good quality.

Great accompaniment to the beautifully cooked, glazed fillet.

Charles Heidsieck

Millésimé Brut Champagne Blend 2000

Shay A
9.5

This came from a special release called La Collection Crayeres Mis En Caves, where Charles Heidsieck released old non vintage champagnes dating back to 1990 and all the way through 2001, alongside a somewhat late disgorged release of their 2000 vintage (this bottle). I opened a bottle of the 2001 MEC (which is a base vintage of 2000) a few weeks ago and it was corked. Thankfully I got a spectacular experience with this 2000!

I was able to enjoy this next to a ‘96 Krug, 15 Henri Giraud and a few other great champagnes. Richly colored in the glass, almost gold like. Distinct aromatics of pencil shavings/sawmill dust, toffee, espresso, and lemon scone. Lots of depth and richness on the palate as expected, but it’s amazingly fresh. Nougat, more lemon pastry notes and plenty of creamy mousse at the finish. In fact, there were a lot of similarities to the ‘96 Krug, but less ginger and slightly less finesse driven. Absolutely delightful!

@Mike R : When we were in NYC, I thought the ‘96 Krug was just as good as the spectacular one I had a few days ago! The Salon and Tatty Comtes were also great.

This Heidsieck I opened was very close to the Krug, but just a hair behind it.

Sawmill Creek Vineyard Cabernet Franc 2018

Really nice cab franc. Light in color but bold medium plus tannic finish. Has some fruit there black cherry and some leather. This could use a couple more years in bottle to mellow the tannins and let the flavor come through but I’m a sucker for bitter and bitey wines so enjoying it as is now. — 5 years ago

Grosset

Polish Hill Clare Valley Riesling 2023

Clear, pale lemon colour. Clean, pronounced floral bouquet. Dry, with high acidity and medium bodied. Intense flavours of lime, lemon and citrus blossom. Long finish with significant minerality. A very good wine that would no doubt be better after a few years.

Red Newt Cellars

South Block Sawmill Creek Vineyards Riesling 2013

Mineral driven, almost gravelly, with some stone fruit and citrus. A bit lighter and less concentrated than some of Red Newt’s best, but still super refreshing and tasty! — 3 years ago

Samuel Smith Old Brewery

Imperial Stout Beer

Black with burnt umber highlights. Low and creamy head springs with bubbles combining to undercut its great form. Fireworks lacing slow falls to leopard spots. Espresso and baker’s chocolate nose boasts licorice and chicory, campfire notes and vanilla. Palate shows none of the sweet elements of the nose initially. Instead, pipe tobacco and unsweetened bitter chocolate, the chicory and burnt toast prevail; a burnt tips taste lingering. Baked pecan, dark caramel, black pepper, and ethiopean coffee, with black chewing tobacco and vanilla bean complete the circuit. Power and restraint, in this lovely offering. This really did set the standard. #samuelsmiths #samuelsmitholdbrewery #tadcaster #NYorks #imperialstout #stout #englishstout #beer #classicbeer #bier #biere #birra #cerveza #cerveja #britbeer #britannia #ukberr #ukstout #britishbeer #britishstout — 4 years ago
