Terrazas de Los Andes

Grand High Altitude Vineyards Malbec 2011

Our final lunch in Cairns last Sunday on the waterfront. This wine chosen for the few guys who were having a steak instead of the stellar seafood curry on the menu. No formal notes but a good workmanlike Argentinian Malbec. — 3 years ago

Elderton

Command Single Vineyard Shiraz 2014

An excellent wine brought to the Cairns BYO Indian Restaurant. No formal notes. A typically delicious rich Barossa Shiraz made from old vine fruit showing ripe plum, chocolate, licorice and supple persistent tannins. A long future ahead. — 3 years ago

Vat 1 Hunter Valley Semillon 2014

Annual Boy’s Trip away - this time to Cairns. At a BYO Indian Restaurant. No formal notes. Hunter Valley Semillon from a good year which could still go for another 10 years. Trademark waxy lanolin, wet hay notes. Such purity on the palate. — 3 years ago

Tyrrells are better than ever Byron. Apart from these 2 excellent whites they have released some individual paddock Shiraz made from very old vines planted in the 1800’s - known as “Old Patch”. Difficult to source even in Australia as their online members snap them up. I did manage to get a couple of bottles through 5 Way Cellars in Sydney.

We lived in Wahroonga so Tyrell’s was a regular stop for us along with Tamburlaine, Lindeman’s, Brokenwood and Lake’s Folly.

Haven’t had Tamburlaine for some time , so not up to date. The others are all going strong, particularly Brokenwood, but Iain Riggs has jacked up his prices particularly for the Graveyard Shiraz.

St. Andrews

Single Vineyard Riesling 2015

Still catching up with notes from before the Cairns trip. A mature Clare Valley Riesling still with a 5+ year future. Citrus flowers of lime and lemon with a sherbet note. Developing a paraffin nuance. Drinking well with a refreshing citric acid cut to cleanse the palate. Moreish. — 3 years ago

Dreadnought Waiheke Island Syrah 2016

Our final long lunch in Cairns at the Salt House on the waterfront. No formal notes but i have always loved this Shiraz from Waiheke Island in the middle of Auckland Harbour NZ. Plummy spicy and savoury with supple tannins. Overtones of Northern Rhone and easy to drink. — 3 years ago

Yes, you would think perhaps the rainfall might be a bit high for quality viticulture but not so.

Grant Burge

Shadrach Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

Another wine brought to the Cairns BYO Indian Restaurant. Shadrach is Grant Burge’s best Cabernet expression whereas Meshach his best Shiraz. No formal notes but I do recall it still being full bodied and powerful at 16 years of age. — 3 years ago

Josef Chromy

Pepik Tasmania Pinot Noir 2020

Our final lunch in Cairns last Sunday for the boys weekend away. A wonderful lunch at the Salt House on the Cairns waterfront. No formal notes. Pepik is the 2nd label of Josef Chromy from the East coast of Tasmania. Red fruits on nose and palate with a little white pepper. A good match with the superb seafood curry. — 3 years ago

Yalumba

The Octavius Barossa Old Vine Shiraz 2008

The first of 3 Yalumba Octavius Shiraz brought to the Cairns BYO Indian restaurant. No formal notes but you could use the notes for the just posted Elderton Command. The other 2 Octavius drunk on the night were 2015 and 2016 which were excellent but way too young. — 3 years ago

Coriole

Lloyd McLaren Vale Shiraz 2010

An excellent wine brought to the BYO Indian Restaurant in Cairns. Close to the WOTN, thanks Lindsay. Coriole’s Lloyd Shiraz has always been a rich wonderful full bodied expression of old vine McLaren Vale fruit. Red and black fruits with chocolate and supple fluid tannins. From an excellent vintage. Great stuff. — 3 years ago
