This is a Pinot Noir - dry. From the eastern bank of the Rhine River, in Germany's Rheingau wine region. Assmannshausen specializes in red wine. — 7 years ago
1997 was, in our humble opinion, the finest year of that decade, which boasted excellent quality in perhaps all but two vintages!
The Pinots from the Assmannshäuser Höllenberg are indeed legendary--this auction Spätlese is intense, concentrated, very complex, and perfect to drink now. — 10 years ago
— 6 years ago
Great vintage for Pinots all over Europe and especially those from Assmannshausen...drinks beautifully now and will keep for another decade at least. #Spätburgunder — 11 years ago
Gorgeous nose of sour cherries, early season cherries and gorgeous deep minerality. The perfect 50/50 mix of cherries and almost chalky/limestone minerality. Floral as well. So clean, deep and penetrative. Palate is balanced and so so pure. Gorgeous acid and mouthfeel with teeming cherry fruit. So barely sweet and outrageous finesse and depth. Pitter patter of a finish that melts on your palate. Wow. Finish is terrific. Sappy and generous. Also the crazy superb intense minerality on the palate. Still has terrific structure and is teeming with energy and minerals. Almost a clay like mouthfeel in the finish. This will slowly unfurl like the rest of the Chat Sauvage wines. Brilliant in such a subtle way. The wine stays with you on the finish. Concentration and depth pick up with air. Between 9.3/9.4 for now. More like 9.35999999. — 4 years ago
2012 Hoellenberg Spaetburgunder Goldkapsel (Auction wine). Classic Rheingau pinot "hardness." Very very good but not a charming wine, rather an intellectual one. — 9 years ago

clear, pale, ruby (could maybe go garnet).
strawberries, detecting a tad bit of must which I think might be corn taint or a fermentation by-product. Nothing jumping out but I’m overly sensitive to it. Acid is med +; some could say high; more tannin than I was expecting. Juicy and nice flavor. — 8 months ago
