Starting my 3 week exploration of Portuguese wines with this entry level white from Alentejo.
A blend of Arinto, Verdehlo, Gouveio, Alvarinho and Viosinho aged partially in concrete and partially in used wood.
Golden in colour with green reflexes. Nice character, southern in style, a bit (nicely) rustic with ripe lemons, dried herbs, a bit of white peach. A touch of spicy, waxy, smoky notes. Rich, savoury and fresh.
On the palate this is medium bodied, with nice balance & freshness. Good depth & length and suitable for late afternoon terrace sipping but also will hold its weight with food.
A very nice effort. — 3 days ago
Slightly rustic, rather fruit forward with a good tannic grip and nice balance. Needs a bit of air as opens up with quite a bit of reduction.
Better with food. — 12 days ago
A white Bourgogne with a slightly modern twist - cool minerality, popcorn/sesame reduction, a salty finish. Beautifully balanced and quite elegant.
A lovely wine. — 21 days ago
An experimental field blend (20 varieties!), with spontaneous fermentation, 3m on the lees, unfiltered & unfined, 173 bottles made.
Light, with so much character, slighty funky. So not Southern Portugal. And yet delicious.
Pale red & slightly cloudy, ultra fresh on the nose with red fruit, a touch of reduction, a subtle funky edge. Enticing!
Feather light on palate, fresh, bright, so juicy. Strawberries, raspberries, rhubarb. A touch of herbs. 10.5% alc!
A beautiful, unconventional wine. Now everyone’s cup of tea… but I love it! — 3 days ago
A medium bodied red from the Jaen (aka Mencia) grape. Quite aromatic with more red fruit than black, a touch of cloves, mint. A bit of turned earth and tree bark. Fresh & quite enticing. Quite Gamay like.
Quite light bodied on the palate, with juicy acidity and nice purity of fruit. Tart, with a slightly bitter note, raspberry & cranberry with a herby finish. Nice length quite a bit of depth. — 4 days ago
A highly decent, classic white Burgundy.
Better just after opening, with some nice matchstick reduction adding an edge.
Very drinkable. — 21 days ago
A fresh & enticing Rabiga/Arinto blend.
Mirabelle & Reine Claude plums, with (underripe) lemons and green apples. Juicy & crisp.
Light on the palate, fresh & clear, juicy with enough depth & substance to make it interesting. Nice length, too.
A nice one for sipping. — 3 days ago
A blend of 100y+ old Encruzado, Bical and Sercial, fermented & aged 11m in French oak.
Very Burgundian on the nose with yellow stone fruit, subtle oak, very elegant, very enticing.
medium bodied on the palate, with brilliant tension between the oaked fruit and the juicy, zippy acidity. Beautiful precision here, with depth & length. Very elegant, very Burgundian indeed.
A truly lovely and quite serious wine. Delish! — 4 days ago
A blend around Chardonnay & Viognier with a bunch of local varieties, aged 10m in 500l French oak barrels.
Waxy & spicy with some shy white peach and dried herbs.
Quite viscous on the palate, beautifully balanced with nice energy, great depth and juicy & spicy acidity. Amazing length, too.
Quite a serious wine with substance. Much more a food wine than just for terrace sipping.
