Presented double-blind at Tasting Group. The wine pours a deep ruby/purple color with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears and some rim variation along with signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous with powerful notes of ripe and slightly dried black and red brambles, red and purple flowers, maybe some rotundone, leather, stony earth and a mix of cool spices and fine baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and the ABV is medium+ to high.

Initial conclusions: this could be a GSM blend, a Bordeaux blend, or a Tempranillo (and blends) from France, the United States or Spain. Despite the powerful fruit, I felt that the wine leaned more towards its structure and non-fruits so I wanted this to be in the geography formerly known as the Old World. I also felt the generosity of the fruit and elevated ABV was pushing me towards a Southern Rhône GSM. Furthermore, I thought this saw a generous use of new oak. Final conclusion: this is a GSM blend from France, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, from a modern producer, 2007. Close!! This is another really great showing of “Cuvée La Côte Ronde”. My son’s English cocker dog named “Pinot” loved it too (no worries bottle was empty). Easy to recognize with that very Cotat signature, nose of mint, spices, pears, white flowers, nutmeg. Palate is nice, expressive, round and rich, acidity is backward, there is a sweetness to it as always but a bit too much for my taste, will wait my other 2012 a few years. 90-91

Facile à reconnaître au nez qui a des arômes épicées, poires, fleurs blanches, noix muscade, menthe. La bouche est ronde et assez “ sucreuse “, acidité plus en retrait, c’eat riche et gras, assez long. Nez et bouche sur les fruits jaunes surtout, du menthol et moins typée Chablis ou Droin, la bouche est agréable, ronde, assez riche, la tension n’est pas tranchante ou pas autant typée que l’on pourrait s’attendre d’un Valmur GC. C’est bien mais sans être grand. 89-90

2nd bottle and still so much pleasure. The well-worked Tannat grape brings notes of black plums; a mineral touch reminiscent of carbon or chemical smoke (not unpleasant), completed with a gourmet chocolate side, and notes reminiscent of pine or cedar sap or eucalyptus. The palate is supple and round with a lot of volume. The wine can still age for several years if we judge by the aromatic density. The tertiary woody touches are well melted, this is a good beefy and greedy bottle which will go as well with a chocolate desert as with a duck breast. Sweet and sour cooking will also go very well.

2eme bouteille et toujours autant de plaisir. Le cépage Tannat délivre des notes originales de prunes noires; une touche minérale rappelant le carbone, la fumée chimique (pas désagréable), complété d’un côté chocolaté gourmand, et des notes évoquant la sève de pin ou cèdre ou l’eucalyptus. La bouche est souple et ronde avec beaucoup de volume. Le vin pourra encore vieillir plusieurs années si on en juge par la densité aromatique. Les touches tertiaires boisées sont bien fondues. Un vin costaud et gourmand, qui ira aussi bien sur un désert chocolaté qu’un magret de canard. la cuisine sucrée/salée ou aigre doux ira très bien également. — 6 years ago
