Happy #CabernetDay w/ 12 Jim Barry Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon "The Cover Drive" comes from the southern boundary of Coonawarra where the old Penola cricket was located, hence the label. Not too minty on the nose with more dusty earth and aromatic blue & black fruits. Very nice balance with moderate body, ripe fruit, bright acidity and fine-grained tannins that give the impression of power and focus. — 9 years ago
We shared this wine with Bruce Redman and his wife Winnie, who brought it to Sue Bell’s dinner party at her house In Penola a week ago. The Redman family’s wine heritage in Coonawarra goes back 113 years to Bruce’s grandfather Bill Redman in 1908. A privilege to break bread with Coonawarra Royalty. Bruce graduated from Roseworthy and spent 2 vintages in Bordeaux before returning to the family winery. This 2013 came from a good vintage with great structure for the long haul. Showing good black currant intensity with leafy, minty, notes on a medium weight palate. Still a long way to go. — 4 years ago

This Shiraz/Mataro blend from Henschke is absolutely lovely, finished in screwcap, great youthful darkfruits and some nice oak to frame it, clearly needs 5-7 years of cellaring, but a lovely wine tonight. Incidentally, the restaurant in Penola (Coonawarra, South Australia) where we drank this tonight is fabulous, for me, better than many of the overpriced, under-delivering restaurants in Napa these days (Restaurant is called “Pipers of Penola”, the front of which was a 1920 Methodist Church!!). — a year ago
